Hello everyone, I’m just here to celebrate my country’s 67th Independence Anniversary. I’m from Ghana in West Africa. I believe we’re mostly known for our food, rich culture, mineral wealth and of course the people. We celebrated our 67th independence anniversary yesterday(6th March). For my personal celebration, I made the Ghana flag as part of my “zero waste” project where my plan is to make use of all my leftover yarns. I just knew by the time I finish my mom would take it and truly, she did.
Most of the time she sends my crafts to school to inspire her students. I actually like it that I get to inspire kids through my crafts. I think that’s top tier.
The materials I used were:
• Red, yellow , green and black yarn
• 1.60mm crochet hook
• a pair of scissors
• a needle
I started by making 25 chains with the red.
My country’s flag has the red, yellow and green colors with a black star in the middle of the yellow.
I then made five rows of double crochets with the red yarn.
The red stands for the blood our forefathers shed in their fight for the country’s independence.
I changed the color to yellow and also made five rows of double crochets.
The yellow signifies the mineral wealth in the country. The ideal colour is actually gold.
I now switched to the green yarn, attached it and made five rows of double crochets.
The green represents the rich vegetation in the country.
I then made the star in the flag with the black yarn. I started by making 2 chains and then made 5 half double crochets. I now chained 6 and then slip stitched in the second stitch, single crocheted, half double crocheted and double crocheted into the third, fourth, and fifth stitched respectively. I repeated this four times and made the star.
The star signifies the freedom and unity of Africa against colonialism.
I now sewed the star in the middle of the gold with the needle.
I was done with the Flag.
Even though my country isn’t where we want at the moment, I believe we’ve come a very long way and I am very proud to be a Ghanaian. Thank you for your time.
