Ash Wednesday + Miércoles de Ceniza [Eng+Spa] 2025-03-05

It's Ash Wednesday, in the Catholic liturgical calendar. I'm not particularly religious, but it's the majority religion in my country, and my family used to be quite religious a few decades ago. I guess it's a common thing.

The celebration of the day is both a way to start Lent (that period of almost 6 weeks before Easter), and it is the day for contrition for the excesses of the carnival. I had thought as a child that the date of the carnival had no religious connotation, but as I grew up I learned that the days of the Carnival were established considering the Holy Week of each year.

And this Wednesday is precisely the day that marks the separation between the brief period of 'unleashing restrictions' and the beginning of the 40 days dedicated to the mental and spiritual preparation for the celebration of the Passion of Christ, in the usual Christian tradition of the Roman rite.

Tradition dictates that the ashes are obtained from the burning of the blessed palms on Palm Sunday of the previous year. On this side of the world, palm branches are often used for the celebration of Palm Sunday, which is why we commonly call these palms ‘Blessed Palms’.

When I was a child, the imposition of ashes on the forehead, forming a cross, was the part that impressed me the most. As I grew up a little, I learned that it was a ritual mark that was meant to serve as a reminder of the limited life of humans, a sign of repentance for sins, and a mark of conversion.

As part of all the celebration of rites, the imposition of ashes also has a value of social cohesion, and is part of the mechanisms of social integration of Catholic communities. Studying at university, I learned that these rituals and shared marks within a particular culture have great weight and importance.

In my current time, even in the years before the lockdown and ‘social distancing’ due to the pandemic, I didn’t go out to church much. I’ve been away from all kinds of gatherings and crowds of people. The memory of this kind of celebration has brought me some nostalgia.

I am an ‘indoor person’, in a very marked way, but I know that my mental health demands that I go out a little more and increase my live contact with people. These are things that I have to attend to. And I suppose that the beginning of this Lent can also serve me to try to return a little to how I was before.

Es Miércoles de Ceniza, en el calendario litúrgico católico. No es que yo sea particularmente religioso, pero es la religión mayoritaria de mi país, y en mi familia sí solían ser bastante religiosos hace unas décadas. Supongo que es algo común.

La celebración del día es tanto una manera de dar inicio a la Cuaresma (ese lapso de casi 6 semanas antes de la Pascua), y es el día para la contrición por los excesos del carnaval. Yo había pensado de niño que la fecha del carnaval no tenía connotación religiosa, pero al crecer me enteré de que se establecían los días del Carnaval considerando la Semana Santa de cada año.

Y este día miércoles es justamente el que marca la separación entre el breve lapso de ‘desate de restricciones’ y el inicio de los 40 días dedicados a la preparación mental y espiritual para la celebración de la Pasión de Cristo, en la tradición cristiana usual del rito romano.

La tradición marca que las cenizas se obtienen de la quema de los ramos bendecidos en el Domingo de Ramos del año inmediatamente anterior. En este lado del mundo se suele usar para la celebración del Domingo de Ramos ramas de palmeras, de allí que comúnmente les llamamos a estos ramos ‘Palma Bendita’.

Cuando yo era niño, la imposición de la ceniza en la frente, formando una cruz, era la parte que más me impresionaba. Al crecer un poco, aprendí que era una marca ritual que debía servir tanto de recordatorio de la vida limitada de los humanos, signo de arrepentimiento por los pecados, y marca de conversión.

Como parte de toda la celebración de ritos, la imposición de cenizas también tiene un valor de cohesión social, y es parte de los mecanismos de integración social de las comunidades católicas. Estudiando en la universidad, aprendí que estos rituales y marcas compartidas dentro de una cultura particular tiene un gran peso e importancia.

En mi tiempo actual, incluso en años anteriores al cierre y el ‘distanciamiento social’ por la pandemia, yo no salía mucho a la iglesia. He estado alejado de todo tipo de reuniones y aglomeraciones de gente. El recuerdo de este tipo de celebración me ha traído algo de nostalgia.

Soy una ‘persona de interiores’, de manera muy marcada, pero sé que mi salud mental demanda que retome un poco más mis salidas de casa y aumente el contacto en vivo con la gente. Son cosas que tengo que atender. Y supongo que el inicio de esta Cuaresma puede servirme también para tratar de regresar un poco a como yo era antes.
