Soska Sisters Describe Thematic Differences Between Yaira and Bloodruth Characters from Rippaverse Comics

in Ecency7 days ago

The Soska Sisters write the Bloodruth and and Yaira graphic novels from Rippaverse Comics and independent comic book publisher founded and operated by Eric July. During the pre-order campaign for Bloodruth earlier in 2025, readers purchased over 13,000 copies of Bloodruth, and Rippaverse has completed fulfillment to those backers.

I posed a question to the Soska Sisters about their writing processes on X.com. Their responses are consolidated here. The Soska's comments form an interesting impromptu essay about the characters and their motivations.

Q: "It would be interesting to hear how the writing process was different than for Yaria.

I would assume that an occult based character and themes - might have closer proximity to your horror work, though it looks like Magus Nuummite was perhaps also a nod to that."

Note: Magus Nuummite is an evil sorcerer, and antagonist of Yaira in the graphic novel Yaira #1.

The Soska's Response

With Sydnee [Sydnee Bloodruth], she is all about the future. She is stepping into her power. She has very human weaknesses and vulnerabilities. We love horror. It comes very easy to think “hey, Sydnee is going through THIS, what monster/demon/adventure would be a good metaphor for that?”

Yaira is powerful and lives long. Her history is very rich and complicated, like she is. Who she’s been and who she is becoming and wants to be is huge for her stories. We show who she is by who knows her and every story hints more and more at her past.

Their motivations are huge differences, for one thing. Yaira has a mission she keeps to herself and will tear through anyone standing in her way.

Bloodruth has a sacred duty passed down to her. She cares about everyone and puts herself in danger to help others.

Both are very driven by their families as well. In very different ways.

SPOILER ALERT—
Yaira losing hers made her cold and distant.
Sydnee losing hers has motivated her to be her best self.

YAIRA’s stories feel a lot like Wolverine, Xena, and Highlander to us.
BLOODRUTH’s stories a more like Buffy, Blade, and Constantine.

THANK YOU for the excellent question
