GIRLS ARE WITHOUT A MANUAL - LOH 299

in Ladies of Hive4 days ago

I grew up hearing the same old story it almost became a folklore.. "women can't really be friends with each other"... There's Too much competition, too much jealousy, too much drama hidden under the surface of every smile.

Older women would warn us, even before I had a chance to form my own opinion. We would hear it in movies, in songs, in offhand comments from men who seemed strangely confident about a world they weren't even part of. And for a while, embarrassingly, I believed it.

I think that belief did something quiet and corrosive to me before I even noticed it happening.

I hesitated to get close to women I admired, because I worried that admiration was just envy wearing a nicer outfit and I've since realized that's one of the cruelest tricks of that stereotype... it doesn't just predict female friendship will fail, it actively makes people behave in ways that help it fail. You expect betrayal, so you never fully open the door, and then you call the shallow relationship that results "proof" the belief was right all along.

It took real, unglamorous effort to unlearn that.

What I've come to appreciate most is something I don't think gets talked about enough... the specific fluency women often have with each other's inner weather. There's a shorthand that develops, a way of reading a text message's punctuation and knowing something is wrong before a single complaint is voiced. A kind of attentiveness that doesn't need everything spelled out. I'm not saying men can't offer that, but there's a particular texture to it between women that I've rarely found anywhere else... maybe because so many of us have been trained, for better and worse, to notice feelings first and facts second.

That doesn't mean it's been easy or automatic. Female friendships, at least the real ones, still take deliberate work.. probably more than romantic relationships get credit for, ironically.

I had to learn to say the uncomfortable thing instead of letting hate and resentment quietly grow under a friendly surface.

I had to unlearn the instinct to compare myself instead of celebrate someone most especially when she was succeeding at something I quietly wanted for myself too.

I've had to accept that closeness sometimes means disappointing someone, and that a friendship built entirely on agreeableness is often just two people performing a role for each other rather than actually knowing one another.

I don't think genuine female friendship is rare because women are inherently bad at it. I think it's rare because we were taught to expect it to fail, and expectation is a self-fulfilling kind of gravity. The women who've stayed in my life are the ones who decided, at some point, not to obey that gravity... who chose intentional honesty over easy comfort, and stuck around long enough to prove the old belief wrong, one ordinary Tuesday at a time.

OMG, you're so right about that! Great job identifying one of the things that causes this frequent misconception! Bravo! 💞

I think it might not be in my place to say...

But I believe this is more or less a personal thing than to be a conditioned thing from parents or environment 😂

It is, in fact, a result of conditioning. She's right.

Hmm, okay, if you say so..

You make a very valid point! We had lively discussion about this on P.Y.P.T.

I would like to join in next time..

Why is this post too short?! Haha. I mean, I could keep on reading because your writing reflects such a meaningful response required for this week's prompt.

It is largely true that we are conditioned to see other women as competition. Too much caution and negative descriptions are implied in female friendships and we wonder why the terrible belief sticks. The answer is all right here.

To break the chain, we've got to constantly question such beliefs, seek to experience female friendships without prior judgements, and remain intentional in building valuable connections with women that continously gives us reasons to choose each other despite any natural challenges.
