I don't know how this will sound, but I just want to be real and honest. There's this small rooftop in our house, its not a fancy place or such, but then that space has become another world entirely for me.
You will hardly see me there during the day, I don't even know what it looks like during the day, I always go there at night when everything is dark, from there I hear the various generator sounds in the neighborhood, I hear the cry of kids in the street, and I see how calm and spacious the whole street is.
There's something special about a blackout night on our rooftop. You will think I usually pray for NEPA to take light or that light shouldn't even come at all, immediately light goes off, I climb up to the rooftop alone. And I usually enjoy my time alone there, sometimes I sit there writing, other times I just play slow soulful music in low volumes, at times I just stare at the sky, but most of the time, I find myself thinking about life, work, family expectations, work, and my future.
I remember my younger brother asking me why I always go up there anytime there's blackout, I just smiled and told him, "everywhere else feels crowded and noisy, but it is usually calm up there."
Now, talking of I could swap lives with any famous person. A lot of people came across my mind as I was pondering on this, and I decided to settle for one, which is Olamide. He's a Nigerian musician and rapper. And I'm not choosing him because of fame and money, no, I'm choosing him because of the impact he's had in people's lives and the kind of person he has shown and proven himself to be.
Olamide has been around the music industry for a while now, and I can tell you for free that his reputation precedes him. A lot of popular and very well known musicians today became known because Olamide believed in them, and brought them to spotlight. He has given a lot of artist/musicians opportunities, support them, stood by them, invested in them and make sure they stood...that kind of impact is a very rare one. Very few humans can do that. There are times he will even put his own work on hold just so make sure a particular artist become grounded first.
One of the things I admire about him is his calmness, Olamide is a very humble person, despite his fame, he remains humble. The industry he's in, which is the music industry is one known for various news from scandals to dramas and all, guess what, you will never find Olamide's name in any of it. I admire how he so much loves, honors, respects, and protects himself and his name.
People always shout and argue about the big 3 in the Nigeria music industry, you will never see them include Olamide's name in it, not because he's not big, but because he's not someone to be compared with others. He's on his own lane, he's respected, and he's a boss on his own. Everyone knows he's too big to be positioned amidst the top three.
To some extent, I've studied this man, just the way I'm studying Funke Akindele at the moment. What stands out is his consistency, he's a street boy, that's where he came from, he understood the street so well, he rose to fame, he helps upcoming artists, he remembers his humble beginnings, and choose to stay humble despite his fame, money and celebrity status.
So, swapping life with him would be me experiencing what it feels like to be able to touch lives, raise people like myself and still remain respected by the streets and even the industry.
