While searching for movies to see, this movie was among the top ten but it just didn't strike as an interesting movie because what does “G20” mean? Name of an animal place or thing? I couldn't decipher this but since the main character held a gun, I figured there would be so much shooting, so I scrolled past it.
On Thursday, I found my sibling reeling with excitement and satisfaction and when I made some enquiries, I realized that she had just finished watching a movie that she loved so much. “Okay, tell me about this movie” and the floodgates were opened. She mentioned every single thing about the movie, her likes, her favourite moment and her dislikes. She even told me the position to sit in while watching the movie and by the time she was done, it felt like I had already watched the movie. Eventually, I saw the movie myself and I perfectly understood why my sister loved the movie so much.
About The Movie
G20 begins with a fierce search for “Avid” which we soon discover to be a crypto currency wallet. Rutledge, a villain, eventually gets hold of the crypto currency wallet and this is where it all begins.
On the flip side, the president of the United States of America, Danielle Sutton travels with her family for a summit aimed at empowering sub Saharan farmers via digital currency. Her aim at the G20 summit is to meet with world leaders and try to sell her idea but the few people she met thought her idea to be ludicrous and waved it off.
Terrorists, with the help of Rutledge, infiltrate and seize the summit, holding the world leaders hostage. With the help of a secret service agent, President Sutton escapes alongside three other powerful world leaders. Rutledge had the perimeter surrounded and the only way to escape was through a presidential vehicle. President Sutton and her followers make it to the vehicle amidst the turmoil and just when she's about to escape, a call comes in from Rutledge where he mentions that he has her husband captive and the only way to save him is to trade herself with him, which the president agrees to.
Rutledge needs the president of the United to help him manipulate the crypto market and by doing so, enrichen himself while the rest of the world runs at a loss. Rutledge is almost successful but he makes the mistake of carrying the president's daughter as hostage while trying to escape and this very act makes Danielle go into full villain mode because no one toys with her family and goes scot free.
This film has a run time of 108 minutes and was released on the 10th of April, 2025 on Prime Video. Directed by Patricia Riggen and starring veteran actors like Viola Davis, Anthony Anderson and Antony Starr, the action thriller is an “action-packed” film.
My Opinion
G20 started with a realistic murder and ended with yet another realistic death and this ticks the box for me. I believe that action movies are supposed to be engaging and thrilling. I caught myself holding my breath on a few occasions and this goes to show how intense these scenes were. On a more serious note, this film beat my expectations by a great length and I'm absolutely glad it did. I do not know if it's just me but courtesy of the action films I've seen in the past few months, I lost hope in action movies but it's good to know that the movie industry is still redeemable.
The themes of love, support, compassion, viciousness, resilience and a lot more were portrayed in this movie. President Sutton was an embodiment of both compassion and viciousness. With her family, she was the softest, sweetest being and to the rest of the world, she was the savage, ferocious leader of one of the greatest countries in the world. I particularly admired how well she could blend her duties as the president with motherhood while at the same time being a loving and dedicated wife to her partner.
The characters in this film were optimally developed and they all played their roles splendidly. Initially, I thought that the president’s encounters with the terrorists were going to be walkovers but these were some of the most engaging and thrilling scenes. I believe that all the characters gave it their best, just as it should be. The pacing was also spot on. No scene felt overly prolonged or too short and every single scene was a pointer to something even better.
This movie's plot makes a lot of sense and is actually food for thought. It goes to show how the crypto markets can be extremely influenced by just a brief speech from one influential individual but this is a discussion for another day.

Recommendation and Rating
This was a really interesting watch for me. It has been a long time since I saw an action film that was worthy of the “action thriller” genre but G20 was worthy of the genre. I had a great time watching it and I believe it deserves an 8.5/10 rating.
If you're up for a realistic action thriller film, G20 would be a great start.
