Being one's brother's keeper is one thing that has been lacking in our today's society and this is because of the envy and hypocrisy that have taken over the lives of many people in the society.
Gone are the days when people cherished their relationship with others. Then as I was told by my aged parents, people lived a communal life wherever they found themselves. Aside from this, the way people relate and accommodate themselves cannot be overemphasized as love was the center of their day to day lives and activities.
However, with what we are witnessing now, all those good attributes of love that I have just mentioned have been put into reverse gear. In fact, all the features of love as preached by the holy scriptures have been neglected and what we now practice in our society now is bitterness and envy.
Furthermore, we now live in a society where people don't trust themselves again. Also, we live in a society where bitterness and envy supersedes the power of love even among family members not to talk about the outsiders who are not biologically related by blood. That's what we now have in our society and families now.
In view of this, I would like to share my personal experience about bitterness of heart and hatred which has become the order of the day in our current society.
Some time ago, when I was in secondary school, a friend of mine, Lekan, stopped talking to me after our SSCE results were released and this was because I cleared all my results at once.
Although, I was not really aware of his action until a friend of ours came to tell me what Lekan was saying behind my back. He said Lekan told him and everyone with them that that result was not mine as he was so sure that it's money that exchanged hands as to what I got in my result.
When I heard this, I wasn't so convinced and I overlooked what I had heard from Jimoh, our friend. But after what Jimoh had told me, I still overheard the same topic being discussed by a set of SS2 students while passing through the school library corridor. It's when I heard this that I got convinced about what Jimoh had told me.
So, I decided to call Lekan to ask about what people have been saying about my result regarding the rumor he had been carrying about, but it's unfortunate that when I asked him how true the rumor ascribed to him was, he didn't deny it. In fact, instead of him to talk to me with a low voice, he began to echo his voice, saying,
“I know your secret and I will let the cat out of the bag. I will make sure I disgrace you in this school. Are you the only one…?
But, even as he was screaming at the top of his voice, I didn't even alter a word from my mouth. I was just looking at him and this got him more annoyed and he would not even stop shouting and screaming.
So, when I realized he would not stop screaming, I left his sight and went my own way. So, when I got home, I assessed all what transpired between us and it's during this that I discovered he was only acting out of envy and bitterness of heart. So, since then, I have always found it difficult to trust people and this is because of their bitterness of heart and enviness which I don't think I can tolerate.
