My journey into Web3 started with a Bitcoin investment in 2020. Back then, I had zero knowledge of what crypto or Web3 was all about, but a friend kept talking to me consistently about the need for me to key into the crypto space.
He went further to tell me that there would be Bitcoin halving that year, and after that, BTC will pump very well, and I can become a millionaire, lolz. The sound of millionaire was enough of a word to convince me, and I quickly sent him some fiat to buy BTC for me. Then BTC was 20k if I am not mistaken. The foolish mistake I made was allowing this friend to keep my BTC in his wallet instead of creating mine and keeping watch on my investment growth. I wouldn't blame him anyway; it was my fault. He tried teaching me how to create a wallet and save my password, but I brushed it off immediately. The whole thing was not sounding easy for me then, and I told him, Don't worry, just buy it and save it in your wallet. Of course I trust you.
But then reality came knocking when BTC did X10, and I called this guy to sell my coin for me, and he started playing me. It was a terrible experience, which I wouldn't want to pen down here, but in summary, he managed to return my capital after several months of friends and my cousin too calling him to settle with me.
That experience made my cousin introduce me to a space called Hive, where I can earn crypto coins through writing and even without investing. Funny enough, I didn't know that the Hive blockchain is regarded as web3, lol. I was only complaining of its complex nature to navigate this space, unlike Facebook and other social media platforms, until I was clarified. I got to know the difference between web 2 and web 3 here on Hive during my engagement in the Leo Finance community. And of course, Hive opened my eyes to whatever I know today about Web3, and my friends here helped me explore other parts of Web3 aside from Hive... It's been quite a journey! I feel like I have been empowered through Hive.
If I was told a few years ago when I began with zero knowledge and still invested in BTC that today, I would be trading on my own, converting crypto coins to USDT and to fiat, getting involved in airdrops, buying crypto coins using smart contracts, watching it pump and taking profit or losing, lol, blogging and earning HIVE coins in this space, and much more, I might probably be laughing at that person, but here I am now with decent knowledge about what web3 is all about and still learning.
Overall, whatever good you set your mind to achieve is possible only if you put effort towards it. Secondly, the kind of people you move along with matters. In my case, my circles helped me discover and keep navigating the web3 space to date.
