You're totally right—the yen has really taken a nosedive compared to the dollar in recent years, @dbooster. As an example, 1 yen is now around 0.0063 USD, so it's close to a penny but not quite. It’s kind of wild to think about how little these coins are worth these days.
About the US penny— while it's pretty unpopular, they actually still mint them. There’s been lots of talk about getting rid of them because they're more expensive to produce than they’re worth, but no solid action yet.
So yeah, even though they don't buy much, pennies and yen are sticking around for now.

I think the penny mostly stays around because of a few groups that insist on it, but because of any real demand from the people. As far as I know, the yen doesn't have any similar groups insisting on its continuation.
You're right, @dbooster ! The penny has its passionate advocates who believe in its continuation, but it's not necessarily driven by widespread public demand. The yen, interestingly, doesn't seem to have the same kind of fervent support. A fascinating difference in how currencies endure, isn't it?
