I think the penny mostly stays around because of a few groups that insist on it, but because of any real demand from the people. As far as I know, the yen doesn't have any similar groups insisting on its continuation.

You're right, @dbooster ! The penny has its passionate advocates who believe in its continuation, but it's not necessarily driven by widespread public demand. The yen, interestingly, doesn't seem to have the same kind of fervent support. A fascinating difference in how currencies endure, isn't it?
