I'd encourage you to read it. It is absolutely one of my favorite books. On the surface it's just a strange sci-fi story, but the world is so rich and the details so exact and the politics are handled so well. I love it.

The unique thing about Dune is so much of the story happens in the characters' heads, with long internal monologues. The old David Lynch 1984 movie handled this by doing a whispered effect to let us know we were hearing thoughts. It worked, but it was weird. But so much of the story happens this way that they are kind of essential unless you massively rewrite the story.
