One of the things that makes life fun is living in a community where one's needs are met, if not all of them. But it saddens the heart that there is nothing like living comfortably in most of the communities in Nigeria today except the government reservation areas, which might have some of the basic amenities that make living in such an environment conducive.
In my city here, living is a bit okay. I said a bit because it's not as choky as a state in Nigeria, Lagos, to be precise. Lagos is a city where seven people can live in a room apartment; accommodation is a major problem in that state generally. Unlike my city here, where we have enough space to accommodate everybody, Although not in every community, at least in some areas.
In every community in a state, there is always a rule that requires each community to create a drainage system that would serve as a passage for more than enough water during the rainy season to avoid flooding. This is the right thing to do, but some don't follow it due to reasons best known to them, which in turn cause damage to life and property.
In my city here, it is walkable and also car-centered; hardly would you see a community that isn't car-centered as well as walkable. Not everyone has a car of their own; many people still go to places in commercial vehicles, which makes almost all the communities in my city car-centered as well as walkable. Going to distances that are not that far from your place of residence where you wouldn't need a car to take you there, you will surely walk, and that makes it walkable.
Talking of technological innovation, that is a big deal that is lost in my city. Technology is not so rooted here in my city, which causes bridges in networking. Sometimes there would be a break in network transmission, and we would have to go a few days without a good network to connect to the world. That alone is disturbing and discouraging, but what can be done? It is our home, after all.
I think having technology companies situated in the city would be of great help. They would be a fast response to any outage in technology and help enlighten the residents on the importance and usefulness of technology as the world is developing and technology is taking over gradually. Innovations are cropping up every day that would be beneficial to humans presently and to generations to come.
Some communities in my city don't have good building plans; some buildings are constructed in spaces where a road should have been constructed. As expected, a building must be some meters away from the road to avoid unforeseen occurrences such as accidents.
If I were to be asked, I would suggest a law that would bind builders and building owners to the right spaces to build back up with the necessary punishment. Although I was told there is such a law, it wasn't strictly followed, or should I say it's not being followed? Such a law should be strictly enforced to protect the lives and properties of people living in the city.
Here, you will see some people construct their buildings in an inappropriate space, such as a place that should be meant for drainage for easy passage of water during any season. When all these. are put in place, I believe my community will be a better place to live. The development of any city is a joint responsibility of both the government and the residents. If the government can't do it, individuals who are capable should help out because here, nothing works out while waiting for the government.
