Love is no doubt indeed a beautiful thing and it's unique. It's a feeling that is hard to hide or suppress because when it's burning in you towards someone, everyone around will see it. Love is not a feeling restricted to just males and females having this sweet feeling for each other, it can be between friends, colleagues, family members and even neighbours.
When we love people, we care about them and would go to lengths just to please or make them happy. I love a lot of people and it is a thing of joy knowing that they also love me back because it's a very terrible thing when people don't reciprocate the good feelings that you are showing to them.
It's been years since I first fell in love with the opposite gender but memories like this are hard to forget, especially with what transpired between me and this person. I was practically in love with him but he wasn't with me.
Being a bright student, I had a lot of friends in school. My classmates were always around me for one reason or another so I enjoyed the attention a lot. Immediately after we moved to senior secondary school, we had newcomers in the class and among them was this handsome boy with the name Wale.
From the moment he stepped into the class, I had a crush on him. It wasn't just me because I caught a few girls talking about how sweet the boy looked and I knew they wanted him as their boyfriend. We were still young and many of us were just reaching puberty so we were eager to have a boyfriend, a handsome guy to flaunt around and nothing more.
"I wasn't the prettiest girl in the class but being brilliant would give me an edge over many of the girls," I thought and started drafting out my plans on how to impress this handsome chap in the class.
I was always the first to answer questions and even worked more to improve my grades just to catch his attention but this boy barely noticed me. The end of the term came and this boy was sitting on top of the class when our results were pasted.
I didn't believe my eyes, he is more of a lone wolf who doesn't really mingle and we can't even tell what his academic performance was like until the results came. Impressing him with academics wouldn't work out any more so I took the bold step and approached him.
He loves reading novels during his free period and that was my ticket into his life. At first, he was rigid but with time, he loosened up.
We started chatting and a lot of students felt like there was something between us already. As time passed, we came to school and left together. We had a healthy rivalry with our academics and things went smoothly between us. We became so close and I thought we were dating already.
Valentine was approaching that year so I decided to get him a top and it prompted me to break my piggy bank. I got a cream and chocolate shirt for him and he really was happy about it.
I wasn't expecting anything in return but that day, he paid for my lunch and it was somehow like we went on a date in the school canteen. On our way out of the school, he said he wanted to give someone something and he doesn't know how the person would feel about it.
I asked who and it turned out to be the Rihanna of our class. A black beauty, tall and chubby girl in the class, every guy in the class crushes on her but Wale never showed any sign of affection towards her until that moment.
"You like her?" I asked looking confused and he said, "Yes"
I immediately looked at myself from head to toe and didn't see any reason why he would like me because my chest and backside were flat unlike the girl he was crushing on.
I pretended to be okay and just walked up to the lady. I told her Wale wanted to see her and we returned to him together. He gave her the Valentine's gift and even the girl was surprised because everyone in the class thought we were dating.
I didn't stop at the Valentine's gift, I bought more gifts and even assisted Wale with writing his notes whenever he missed school.
I planned to keep tabs on them but I didn't see anything happening so I felt safe and assured that Wale was mine. I and Wale even got closer until one weekend in SS3 when I went to return a book to him. I met Wale and this girl sitting under a pear tree in his dad's compound.
I was shocked and it seems they have taken their relationship to a higher level. When or how it happened, I didn't know but I felt sad he didn't see me as a girlfriend. I was offended but as I grew older, I realised that he loved me just as a friend and I was the one crazy about him.
