The number one thing I’m known for at my workplace is my writing skills. Whether for official purposes or not. Most times when people don’t know how to go about their letters or essays, they come to me. I also genuinely like writing and most of my writings are filled with whatever I felt in that moment, whether formal or not. About three weeks ago, I had just returned home from a journey. I had no plans of doing any work that day and I just wanted to rest because I was really tired.
I had a call that morning from one of my senior colleague at work and I actually didn’t answer on purpose because as I said, I didn’t want to do anything work related that day. The previous night, I received a WhatsApp message from him but it was around 8pm and I didn’t open it because I was tired and there was no way I was going to open a work message after working hours. So when I saw the call the following morning, I knew it was because of the message he sent me.
I quickly went to WhatsApp to check and guess what? It wasn’t even work related, he only needed me to write some essays for him. I didn’t have any problem with that except, they were personal letters and even though we both have the same educational background, I knew it was going to be a problem for me someway. According to him, I was his only hope and not helping meant he was going to lose it. It was an assured international opportunity which he had gotten and needed to submit those two essays and that would be it. I knew he wouldn’t ask me to help if he didnt need me.
As he was texting me, he was already at the embassy of that country in Accra making his documental preparations. I wrote the essays with my information and then edited it with his information because I already had it. It took me a while because I wanted to put in my very best so he gets it. I sent all the essays to him and he thanked me for helping him.
I didn’t hear from him again until just last week when this foreign number called me. Oh I mean if you’re an African, you’ll know what I was thinking.
I was ready to tell the person I was going to report him to the police. I thought it was one of these scam calls until the person mentioned “professor doctor environmentalist”. That’s a name only some people at work call me with. I didn’t even have to think so much to know that was my senior colleague. He was so excited and couldn’t stop thanking me. He was already in Edinburgh, UK. I was so excited for him and proud that at least my little but not so little essays played a part in his success and relocation. He is currently working in UK chasing his dreams.
I’ll skip the part where he asked me to check my account and there was pounds…hahaha. All in all, I’m so happy I did this. I can imagine what would have happened if he didn’t get me to help him with those essays. Losing an opportunity you equally deserve just because of petty reasons, that would have been so sad and even make me angry.
