Woodpecker visitors

in Feathered Friends9 months ago

Each week @nelinoeva hosts a themed contest in the Feathered Friends Community. There are some great prizes. This week's theme is SMALL BIRDS. You can see the contest rules here

My post is not a contest entry and although I prefer taking bird photos away from the feeders, sometimes the feeders make it so much easier to capture these beauties! These photos are all taken through the window. They refuse to come close if I'm outdoors.

There are 4 different woodpeckers that visit my feeders regularly. Red-bellied, Hairy, Downy, and the Northern flicker. The Pileated woodpecker is a much rarer visitor.

This Red-bellied woodpecker is enjoying the suet feeder. I always feel that this bird deserves a better name. It has to be at just the right angle to see the little patch of red on the lower part of its belly.

2 different woodpeckers. The Red-bellied and a little Downy Woodpecker. Note the size difference.

And now on to the big guy! The Pileated Woodpecker doesn't visit my feeder often, but when he does he commands attention. It's rather like having a cat land on the feeder!

I hear them occasionally banging away on trees, but rarely see them, so it was thrilling to see him at my feeder.

Here he is for us to compare his size to the Hairy woodpecker.

This photo shows the size of the Hairy compared to a small sized chickadee.

The medium sized Hairy and small Downy Woodpeckers have almost identical markings, the main difference is their size. Here are a male and female Downy at the feeder. The male is the one with a red spot on his head.

The Northern flicker is a medium sized woodpecker that is the only one my woodpecker visitors that migrates south when the weather gets cold.

It's good to see them again! Spring is on the way!

The most gifted and talented drummers from the extended musical family of the birds are put in the spotlight to perfection.
Their Croatian counterparts who live near my house have chosen the trunk of a tree for their drums. But if it gets too boring for them there, the window frame of my bedroom window will do just fine.
You won't find a better alarm. 😮🐦

Occasionally they drum on the metal fireplace flu at the top of my chimney! There is definitely no sleeping through that. I am certain that whatever girl they are trying to attract can hear it miles away. 😂

I have seen woodpeckers for the first time in my life and I must admit to say that they seem to look really cute Aww.

They like wooded habitat, so it doesn't surprise me that you don't see them there

Yes we do not have wooden landscapes near our area you are correct on this one.

Beautiful captures! Ah... you remind me another online friend who posts a lot a of birds from her feeder and butterflies too!

I seldom see butterflies here in the woods. It's too shady for most flowers to grow. But all the trees provide great homes for the birds!

Hope you enter the contest!

What do you have in the feeder that they're going for? I thought they mostly just fed on bugs. We live a couple blocks from a 725 acre park that's mostly old growth forest, so occasionally they visit us but mostly I just see them in the park. Lol, the first time my partner encountered the pileated they thought it was a small turkey, those things are impressive.

I think they are omnivorous and opportunistic! I buy those seed cylinders at Wild Birds Unlimited. I get the ones with hot pepper in them to keep the squirrels away. Cardinals, nuthatches, titmice, bluejays chickadees... Everyone loves them.

I'll have to check those out. I made a feeder out of scrap wood a couple years back but the squirrels rob it so much.

The cylinders are expensive, but they are compressed and even with the heavy traffic I get they last for a week. About the same time as a bag of seed dumped into the old feeder.

That is very interesting because I have no idea if there are so many species of woodpecker, and you can get in just from a single feeder is even more awesome.

I live in an area with great habitat for birds and wildlife!

Cool to see a pileated on your feeder! we see them and hear them lots this time of year but not on the feeder. Such a prehistoric sounding call. Also cool to see a northern flicker on the feeder! we seldom see them on the feeders usually on the ground. What a fun post 😍

Pileated Woodpeckers seem prehistoric Rather like pterodactyls! It was really fun to see him come to the theater a few days in a row, but then he must have moved on because I haven't seen him since.

The flickers are usually on the ground, but they seem to like the suet block and stop by there frequently.

Lovely group, miss it truly

You don't see as many birds where you are living now?

No, a lot more and I have watched as they have developed the wet lands and more birds move in. There was the issue with Birdwatchers community a few yrs ago and I haven't been allowed back in since :(

In Feathered Friends?

I just looked and the community has no one muted.

Oh wow! perhaps time does heal all wounds. Would be great to share the growth of our wetlands

Wow! You got some amazing photos. Capturing two species of birds at the same time is just great!👍

They don't always tolerate each other very well, but I think many of these same birds have been coming to my feeders since they were fledglings and have gotten familiar with sharing a bite to eat together! 😁

Beautiful birds. This is really amazing to look at. Nicely captured

Thanks! Nature is incredible, isn't it?

Those shots turned out great, it seems like they posed for you, I am surprised by the number of varieties of my type of birds, the trees will be full of holes in that area😅, Have you never found a nest?

The nests are usually in hollow cavities in trees. I don't ever see where the nests are, but it's fun to see when they first come to the feeders together

Here's one for you

Beautiful photographs! Nature offers us an incredible range of colors and shapes in these admirable creatures. Thank you very much for sharing these photos.

Thanks! Nature is amazing!

🤠💕 I am also a lover of the grandeur of nature. Greetings!!

Beautiful capture. You did a great work in capturing those birds.

Thanks so much!

I am seeing for the first time such feeders. Here we place some feed for the birds in bowls in our gardens.

Ever thought to catch them? 😜

@tipu curate

I would never do that. Birds never should be caged!

So sweet of you

Everyone deserves to live free!

Yep
But not all minds are same.

Hello dear friend @melinda010100 good morning
You live in a wonderful place, being able to watch these birds from your window is great. I am a fan of woodpeckers, they are beautiful and very hard-working birds.
I take this opportunity to wish you a happy start to the week.

Thanks! I love watching them!

Such a delight. I Iove the woodpeckers. 🙂
The Pileated Woodpecker always reminds me of the cartoon character.
Monday Morning Cat GIF

Exactly! I keep waiting to hear mine laugh!

The bird pictures are really cute but I wonder why you are not using it as an entry
Any reason?

It doesn't fit this week's theme, plus I am an admin for Feathered Friends!

Great pictures! Such pretty birds. I rarely see any of these unless I'm up in the mountains. They just stay away from populated areas (like Orange County) where I live!
!DHEDGE

Yeah, they need habitat Thanks for reminding me that I need to send out my DHEDGE today

You're welcome! I try to use all of my calls daily to help people out as well. How's the weather treating you these days?

Most of mine get used in Shadow Hunters Community these days. The community has had a large growth spurt as more people look for ways to earn more Ecency Points!

Temps in the 50s and storms yesterday had tornados bouncing all around. Local Schools were unable to release students and had a shelter in place order for an hour after school release time

Tornados are scary! I bet the kids loved staying after school... not... I have a couple pictures to enter in Shadow Hunters, I'll have to put one in this week. That's great that it's growing like that.

I'm going to try to earn at as many points as possible. The 200 HP delegation is kind of a nice, I used one this week. I have enough for another week but I need to get picking up more points!

I have a large delegation to Ecency that earns me 10% in Points every day. (plus liquid Hive) It keeps my Points wallet filled!

That is awesome! Not me, I have to earn it the hard way! lol
