Phoenicurus ochruros or the Black redstart

Look at this nice bird that I spotted at the north coast of Spain. I could come very close to him, he was not scared at all. Probably he thought that I had food with me or something. I think i was eating cookies but I am not sure any more.

I know the dutch name of this bird and it is exactly how it looks like, "zwarte roodstaart"Or translated "black red tail". And staart means tail.

So I thought the English name could be Black red tail. But no 😅 Some dude called it a Black redstart! Like what does that mean? It looks like our Dutch "staart"(tail) but just with one a?
Who can tel me why it's called like this?

But it was a nice moment there on the steps of playa de catedrales beach.

He kept flying around me while I was waiting for the tide to go down. So I could photograph him from all sides.

Nice bird, very beautiful photography

Thank you 🙏💪

It must be because it has a striking red tail, the bird is very particular, it must be because of that

Yes but it's called redstart with ona a. Is that word "start" the same as tail?

Brilliant shots as always. I also came across redstarts who let me approach close.
As far as I know the redstart means redtail, just the word start is an old English. The native English speaking could tell better.

Maybe they call it wheatear because of its long tail. haha

Sorry I don't get that

How are you dear friend @haastrecht
