Show Me A Photo Contest Round 221- the Rainbow Lorikeet show

in Feathered Friends10 days ago (edited)

Hi there Feathered and non- feathered friends, I hope that you're all well and capturing great images of some of Mother Earth's most amazing and magical, winged creatures.

My friend Cat and I have been house sitting on Lake Macquarie in NSW for the past couple of months, and although I have been absolutely flatout, creating children's books here https://peakd.com/hive-122108/@chocolatescorpi/an-educational-deep-dive-to-the-deepest-depths-to-educate-enlighten-delight-and-empower and building websites here https://chocolatescorpionpublishing.shop/ driving all over the countryside to sell and My Mum's Real Vintage as well as uploading all of her stuff onto eBay here https://www.ebay.com.au/usr/chocolatescorpi, I did manage to sit down and capture thousands of photos- mainly of the neighbourhood birds when we first got to the house sit.

Infact, it is in such a divine spot, looking down the gorgeously manicured lawn and landscaped gardens to the lakefront, we both found it hard to move from the balcony for the first couple of weeks and just sat in awe, listening to the myriad of songs and sounds, watching the constant movement of the birds in this true bird haven- oh, and taking thousands of photos of the birds, ofwhich I would like to show you a tiny selection here and enter this first photo into the 221st edition of the #SmaP - Show Me a Photo #contest.

I love all of these photos that I have included in this post because all of the Rainbow Lorikeets look like they're definitely looking straight at the camera (and maybe they were) but I was so far away, using my Nikon p950 mega zoom lens (which is a whole other story...), so how could they know that I was "Shooting" them- the ONLY WAY A BIRD (OR ANY ANIMAL) SHOULD BE SHOT- WITH A CAMERA too by the way!

So anyway, as I was saying......although I love the way that all of the birds look like they're peaking out at me and it is still such a hard choice, I've chosen this first photo for the contest as the dare devil bird is balancing on the very top branch, of the very top of this beautiful Grevillea flower and is just about to chomp into it too.

I also support a non- profit here in Melbourne https://www.birdrehomingservices.com.au/ that re-homes abandoned pet birds (and yes there are many of them),so I like to help them create awareness of birds and responsible bird ownership, as well as helping them make a bit of moula by creating and donating things like these Rubiks cubes to sell- like this one of the Kookaburras here too https://peakd.com/hive-106444/@chocolatescorpi/feathered-friends

So you too can help Nikky and the flock find furfeather homes for these guys by donating here as you guys all know, just how expensive birds are- especially if you have more than a handful!

Monetary donations are a huge help to any rehoming service. All money donated goes towards the health and wellbeing of all animals surrendered to us. This includes food, medical care and everyday expenses. If you wish to directly donate to our organisation, our bank details are below:

Bird Re-Homing Services Inc.
BSB: 633 000
Acc - 144 071 750 Bendigo Bank

And if you want your own Feathered Friend Rubiks cube, please let me know as I also have White Cockatoo's and the Scaly breasted Lorikeet too so far and every one bought, I will donate the full amount to the Bird Rehoming service.

The pet bird trade is a billion dollar industry worldwide. The number of unwanted and homeless companion birds continues to grow, driven by unregulated and needless breeding endemic to the pet trade.

It is estimated that the average captive bird will live in at least five homes before finding a permanent home or dying prematurely due to malnutrition, lack of medical treatment or household accidents including predation following escape. https://www.birdrehomingservices.com.au/about-us

Thanks so much to @nelinoeva and her flock for creating and curating this fantastic community and contest to share the love and lives of these incredible beings throughout the world.

Wow thank you so much for the external share!
I actually never thought about that. I do have a reddit account, but use it so rarely.

I must remember to use it more.

We appreciate your work and your publication has been hand selected by the geography curation team on behalf of the Amazing Nature AN Community. Keep up the good work!

WOW, that's awesome!
What an honour thanks so much team!
I really appreciate it and very happy to hear that more people will see the post, so more people can learn about the plight of domesticated birds and Nikky's rehoming service for them too!

Thanks so much for having me and I've got to tell you how great it is to be back and to be able to share my stories about the birds in this wonderful community!
Tell me, is the comment contest still happening these days?

I used to really enjoy that one!

A very colorful species and some great shots 👏🏻

Oh yes they are so incredibly beautiful and funny, also very loud and destructive too- like all birds really....

I love birds so much and miss my girl Indy Jean all day every day....😭

One day- when I've had a chance to travel more first (especially Europe), I'm thinking about rescuing more. I was going to domate all of Indy's things when she died and was litrally a nano second away from hitting the send button the email, when I just stopped and said "nup"- Just in case.

Wonderful thank you, I'm so glad that you enjoyed the photos of these gorgeous birds as much as I do, and have learnt more about the hidden aspect of domesticated birds...

Sad when birds are captured (any wildlife) for trade, what gorgeous garden for birds to enjoy their favourite snacks while you snapped away in contentment.

Yes, that is so true, but its just as bad when they are constantly bred, to be discarded.
As far as I'm concerned, the only difference between the ugly Puppy factory trade and bird breeding, is that people are far more aware of the horrendous conditions that puppy factories are, than they are of the completely hidden, completely unregulated and ungoverned bird breeding is- and in this hidden practice, is a world of filth, disease and cruelty, when the bird is first bred and then even after adopted, and that is why there are so many non-profits out there like Nikky's that are trying desperately to rehome hundreds of abandoned and relinquished birds.

Not only that, birds can live for decades, so what happens when the owner dies?

I inherited my girly girl when mum died and she was supposed to live till was about 50, but was only 18 when she devastatingly passed a few months ago...😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

But what would have happened to her if she had of lived till she was 50 (I would have been 84), but what would have happened to her if I died before that.

Then she would be totally heartbroken (like I am now) and would have had to go to a 3rd owner, not knowing why. And this is one of the biggest things that people don't think of when they do get birds on a whim.

Not only don't they realise just how messy, noisy, expensive, demanding, time consuming little darlings that they are, they also don't think about the affect on the bird when it has to go through multiple owners and that's not fair on the birds.

Anyway...sorry to rant, but I just wish humans would be far more thoughtful before they acted....

Bird trade is devastating, had a friend who's bird loved her husband and attacked her.

Later started to lose feathers, very fortunate to find a professional who took her in, she desired a mate fortunate to live in massive aviary, most probably still there, that is about twenty years ago.

Too many animals being handled cruelly by man.

Yes and that is another un- thought of fact too.
as much as birds love to be in flocks, they only want one partner and too many people don' realise this.

Can become quiet mean when they don't get what they want, my friend could not move around her home without being attacked, few nasty nips with the beak as well.

Oh yes, I've seen that too...Very demanding they are...And I equate their bites to the same as a Croc bite...just much smaller, but just as piercing and painful.

Something you won't forget in a hurry.

Haaa yes, my old flatmate knows that.

He thought that Indy- my Indian Ringneck and him were getting to be besties, so he went up to her as she was sitting on the door of her cage- which was always open when someone was home, and he out his hand out and she bit him on the thumb and it went almost all the way through his HUGE thumb and he has a hole in it for months after that- especially since he was a traveling balloon blower and needed to use his thumb all day every day....

Apparently she didn't even give him any warning screech- just went for it and bit down.

I am so happy to see your post and entry. The photos are just brilliant. This colourful birds deserves its name.
By the way I got my P950 a couple of months ago. 😀

Hey thank you so much @nelinoeva, I really appreciate it and it's great to be back to be able to post in this wonderful community- always one of my favourites!
You are the only other person that I know that has a P950- apart from the YT reviews and tutorials...so I would love to hear about your experiences with it so far as nine haven't been these best.
I had to send it back twice for repairs under warranty- full lens rebuilds and still dodgy now- actually worse...

BUT BRILLIANT CAMERA- WHEN IT WORKS...

Oh dear, you had really lot of troubles with the camera.
So far I am happy with mine as I read the reviews before I decided to buy. Then I joined a group in FB -Nikon Coolpix P900 P950 P1000 P1100 Group. There I saw what photos were posted and I was sure this camera will be OK for birding. I know that there are features that are worse compared to the DSRL, but knowing that beforehand saved me any disappointment. I like the silent shutter and the superzoom. Still can't manage sharp photos of flying birds. This seems to be more difficult.

Yeah I did the same- read and watched heaps of reviews, watched comparison videos between the 950 and other similar cameras, and decided to buy it because I was so impressed with it, And still am- when it works properly.....

I LOVE the superzoom and have gotten some stunning shots with it, but more than anything, mine has problems with closeups- when I'm not too far away either. It just won't focus on automatic, but when I try to shoot in manual, it does this weird jump back, from the original framing...

Anyway, I will still persevere with it, because I do get great shots from it, it's just frustrating that it's so hit and miss- literally, spot on for one shot and then the next- exactly the same shot-distance, settings, everything but no luck.

I will check out the FB group too, thanks for mentioning it.

I was struggling with the macro shots too, but I don't know if this is me who cannot cope with. I fiddled with the settings and maybe that was my problem.
Oh, I love the moon photos. Really impressed by the camera considering that I have a telescope (didn't use it for a long time).

Yes, I saw ppl on YT talking about the amazing macro ability, but then as I was having sooo much trouble- even fiddling with the settings, I spoke to a camera expert in the shop where I bought it and he said that its not a "true" macro camera....very disappointed I am with that as I was really looking forward to finally being able to get macro shots of insects...

My best friend is a 30 yr professional photographer and even she says that it's a lemon....

Well, that is disappointing.
I managed this shot, but the bug was big for a start. 😀
1000021322.jpg

Yes, I can only get big "macro" shots too.
That is a great shot though!
