A New Guest - Waxwing

in Feathered Friends4 days ago

Greetings friends.
Happy New Year!
The last day of the New Year's celebration in Russia is January 13th. That is why I still wish you, friends, a happy New Year.

I wrote in my signature back in the fall that the birds would surprise me this year. It happened. 2 days ago, I saw 2 flocks of Waxwings from my window. They attacked the rowan tree next door, pecked at the berries, and flew to a tall birch tree. They carried out about 3 attacks, I even filmed this attack. But the quality of the photo is not very good.
After the third attack, the flock flew away, but after a while one crested bird flew to my feeder. Apparently, she was attracted by the large number of birds sitting in the tree and decided to check the menu in our bird canteen.

Well, the bird flew from branch to branch but did not even approach the feeder. She didn't like my treat. I understand that the main food of this bird is rowan berries and tree buds. Even now, she tasted the thorn buds, looked around, most likely in search of her relatives, and flew away. But I managed to take a lot of photos of this beautiful bird in this short period of time.

What do I know about Waxwing?

  1. It is a gregarious bird. Every year flocks of these birds appear in the village with the onset of the autumn cold and eat all the rowan berries. But 2 or 3 years ago, they were nowhere to be seen! Rowan berries hung untouched on the trees until spring. I thought then that the birds had become massively ill and died.

  2. I believe that with the onset of real winter, these birds fly away from our cold region to warmer places. But the appearance of Waxwing at the end of December shook my opinion a little. But the current very warm winter is most likely to blame. The air temperature has not yet dropped below -15 degrees and then for no more than a day. By the way, now the temperature is +2 degrees outside and it's raining. I don't remember such a winter in my 55 years.

  3. What else do I know about waxwing? Probably nothing more. The body size and weight are approximately similar to a thrush.

  4. The singing, or rather the whistling of these birds, cannot be confused with anyone else's. These are real whistlers.
In Russia, they are called sviristeli (whistles).

To the start, attention, get ready... Start!
Approximately 4 photos of the flight preparation turned out. But I won't pollute the airwaves.

There is a break from the starting table, or rather from a tree branch! Let's go! 2 seconds, flight is normal...

Here they are the raiders. That's about a third of the pack. The tree is about 50 meters from my window.
Probably, the gang leader sent a young fighter to investigate. After receiving the scout's full report, the commander ordered the entire flock to fly away.
Bye, guys!!!!

I think that this year the birds will surprise me and surprise me many more times with their presence and behavior.
