In this episode of The Apprentice, the men’s and women’s teams had a task: buy 10 types of goods at the lowest possible price.
The women’s team divided their work clearly. They focused on bargaining for products that could bring more profit and finally got an overall discount of 22%. The men’s team chose Sam as their leader, but he made a terrible decision. He ignored products with big bargaining room, like golf clubs and leg wax. Instead, he suddenly stopped the negotiation in Chinatown to buy gold—gold’s price changes very little in a day. What’s worse, the team provided incorrect information about the sellers. In the end, they only got a 9% discount and lost badly.
When reviewing the task, Trump said bluntly: "I’m even thinking about not hiring men anymore." He was very disappointed with the men’s team’s poor performance. When Sam argued, "You need respect to lead a team," Trump pointed out the key point right away:“you have to get the respect. you have to earn it, and if you don't earn it,you have to demand it”（ "Leadership is never something you wait for others to give you. You earn it through your work. If you’re not capable, you should use courage to take control of the team. Empty words are useless." )Finally, Trump decided to eliminate Sam without hesitation: " for two weeks, you've been on the edge,…… You're fired soon."
The business lessons from this competition are clear: Put your resources into things that bring high value. If you choose the wrong direction, all your hard work is for nothing. Also, the most important thing for a manager is to "choose the right things to do and lead the team well." If you can’t focus on the key points or control the team, you have to leave when you lose. This is not only Trump’s rule for elimination but also a simple survival rule in the workplace.
