Tales of the Urban Explorer: Viscum Water Gardens & Aquatics

Viscum Water Gardens & Aquatics' are an enigma. They appear to have moved to a new location while keeping the details hushed. The fact that they left all their stock behind seems immaterial.

38_IMG_0294_38.jpg

I thought for a second I had found them. A ‘Viscum Ltd’ declared themselves insolvent in 2022 after just three years in business, but this Viscum were far from South Yorkshire.

NewPlace.JPG
...'Viscum's new hideout. A little nicer than the old and not in the sticks. Was this a factor?'...

It didn't take me long to figure out that they were still in business and in a nicer place than previously.

Now.JPG
...'the old place is still there and probably still a decent explore. Surprising as most places get demolished these days if unused'...

The old site is still there, according to the maps with a January 2025 timestamp, and it looks worse for wear than it did when we visited a year and a half beforehand.

Why did they not take their stuff with them, fucking wierdos? Business must be booming in the fish trade, that's my take, and they can afford it.

So let’s get down to the explore. ‘Viscum Water Gardens & Aquatics’ was one of the last visits in our South Yorkshire trip and one to remember.

It was situated next to some concrete company or similar on a long stretch of rural road with just the odd car passing by, usually at 90mph.

39_IMG_0295_39.jpg

No interfering busybodies, the concrete workers were all at home as this was a weekend, leaving us with the minor problem of crossing the road without getting killed by speeding motorists.

This fence caused little issues to either of us, and even geriatric me can hop over that in a few seconds. We were in, and great promise lay ahead.

34_IMG_0290_34.jpg

What were we going to find? The inside was a mass of buildings, some in better shape than others.

35_IMG_0291_35.jpg

The front door seemed like a great place to start; it's to the right in this image. I was expecting a warm welcome from the owners after climbing over their large, underwhelming security gate.

36_IMG_0292_36.jpg

That’s just plain rude. Not open when we have come all this way from the other side of the Pennines?

37_IMG_0293_37.jpg

I don't know what a 'Animal Planter' is, but from the look of those prices, you don't get a real live cow for £45.

1_IMG_0257_1.jpg

This one was hot off the Tour Bus, so I expected the usual levels of vandalism and was not disappointed. Access was easy, being in the middle of nowhere with just about every building missing windows, along with ubiquitous smashed-in doors.

2_IMG_0258_2.jpg

This was the first sign of products being left. One or two I can understand, but what you will see later is mind-boggling.

3_IMG_0259_3.jpg

They look like they have been here for some time. How long had this place been deserted?

4_IMG_0260_4.jpg

I could see it was going to be one of those explorations where there's too much to take in. We don't tend to stick around long, as unwanted company can arrive.

5_IMG_0261_5.jpg

Small fish tanks, all wrapped up in cellophane. These things don't come cheap, and yet they were not worth taking to the new premises?

6_IMG_0262_6.jpg

Would it work on my outdoor fish pond? A few tadpoles live in it, as well as a lot of slime.

7_IMG_0263_7.jpg

Sadly, there are no giveaway dates on the notice board. The amount of damp on the paper told another story.

8_IMG_0264_8.jpg

9_IMG_0265_9.jpg

There were many larger fish tanks in this room, all of the glass variety.

10_IMG_0266_10.jpg

11_IMG_0267_11.jpg

Make your choice, pick one and leave. No fish included.

12_IMG_0268_12.jpg

The tank far side looks mighty large. Again, no fish; they must have suffered a terrible fate when the company moved.

13_IMG_0269_13.jpg

Would you like to live there?

14_IMG_0270_14.jpg

The building seemed to go on and on, like a large rectangle with the length being twenty times longer than the width. In some areas, it had seen more decay and was getting structurally dodgy.

15_IMG_0271_15.jpg

Items were starting to slip off the shelves, and that roof is looking unstable.

16_IMG_0272_16.jpg

If you want to make a purchase, then you have arrived at the right place.

17_IMG_0273_17.jpg

Here's a wonderful selection of books, all very fishy in context as well as being a little on the damp, mouldy, slimy side.

18_IMG_0274_18.jpg

@anidiotexplores lurks in the shadows, up to no good.

19_IMG_0275_19.jpg

An interesting composition; I thought we were in a fish shop, not an artist's studio?

20_IMG_0276_20.jpg

Now I wonder what this was used for; the fish aspect was fading from my memory fast.

21_IMG_0277_21.jpg

The green cover resembles a guitar. Things were turning a little strange.

22_IMG_0278_22.jpg

Was it a greenhouse?

23_IMG_0279_23.jpg

…or an area for the employees to work out?

24_IMG_0280_24.jpg

After that short interlude, it was back to the regular fishy business. Some fish had a better death than others.

25_IMG_0281_25.jpg

Would it be worth struggling to get down there? The side was starting to cave in with broken glass everywhere and a floor full of snaking cables. Nah.. probably not.

26_IMG_0282_26.jpg

They are a little mucky but probably still usable.

27_IMG_0283_27.jpg

Male Guppy, Cory Mix, 'DO NOT TAP ON TANK'. Of course..., I tapped.

28_IMG_0284_28.jpg

Whiptail Cats are pricey. There was something in there, ah yes… dead fish, and not the type used for Fish & Chips.

29_IMG_0285_29.jpg

I hope they took the Sabao Goldfish at least. At fifteen quid each, they are not cheap.

30_IMG_0286_30.jpg

What a fantastic spread of goods! Why were we the only shoppers?

31_IMG_0287_31.jpg

You can’t deny there are many things to buy, or take if you are that way inclined.

32_IMG_0288_32.jpg

All the paperwork is gone; don't leave any evidence of accounts if you are considering making a run for it after midnight.

33_IMG_0289_33.jpg

Someone had taken the time to hurl a rock through the pretend streetlight. Fucking idiots.

I did look but couldn't find any reference to the moving of 'Viscum Water Gardens & Aquatics'. They are still trading in the Doncaster area. It has to be the same company.

Why leave all this behind?

Maybe Animal Planters was done fantastic ruse to con the locals into thinking they could grow them from seed 🤣🤣

I have fond memories of fish shops like this from when I was a hash smoking fiend always looking to hit side of that tubing for my home made bongs!!

How many steaks could you get for £35? Cheaper than multiple visits to Miller & Carter I would wager.

image.png

Grow your own Wagyu!

Gardening not one of your strong points then? an animal planter is a planter...that you put plants in...in the shape of an animal in this case!

I mow the grass every 2 weeks with a petrol mower, does that count? I did feel it was a great deal for many steaks.., they would last all winter if frozen?

Nah, that doesn't count.

Depends what they are made of, probably plastic at that price if I understand your question correctly LOL LOL

Yum yum...

How strange! There are shelves, boxes, hoses, fish tanks, and other products. In my country, there wouldn't be even a stone left. There are so many valuable things in that place. Strange.

Many have said that before, it will be all gone.., my wife included. Here it probably would too if it was in an urban area. People don't know about it.

Surprising how much stuff they left behind, they got out of there in a big hurry!

That image with the file cabinets and the trees is so weird, but a beautiful contrast at the same time. It plays with your brain, seeing those two things in the same picture. I quite like it!

That image with the file cabinets and the trees is so weird

Yes, I liked that one. I try and find images such as there wherever I go.

Wow, I would have expected most of that stuff to have been smashed. Especially the glass tanks. I would also bet that less civil folks would take a lot of that stuff and try to resell it on eBay or something like that. This looks like it was a fun explore for you.

It was like a business time capsule, they are even rarer than residential ones. Being rural once again has saved it. Now they are probably all gone, or vandalised.

Very cool! I'm glad you got to experience it.

You've put together a good photo section. You can see that the passage of time is unforgiving, but it also looks like they ran away from the place, which I don't understand, unless they looted the place, because there's so much mess and things left lying around.
