Raith Lake, Scotland in autumn glory

in Quratoryesterday

Hello Hello Hivians and Hivers

"Water, water, everywhere, Nor any drop to drink."

The above quote is from epic poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" (1798) by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge and was one of my favourite compulsorily reads from school.

As you may know I live in Scotland, and in particular in Kirkcaldy, a coastal town in the Kingdom of Fife.

Did you know we have our own Nessie?

Look below and can you see the tell-tale three shapes of Nessie?

Well thanks to the weekly contest from @qurator I can show you our local lake.

The body of water is our Raith Lake on the old Raith estate.

If you thought that Scotland had lochs and not lakes, then you will mostly be right!

There are over thirty thousand lochs in Scotland! In fact they count it as 31,460 freshwater lochs (or bodies of standing water).

The water we see is Raith Lake

It is an articficial body of water that was built for the toffs in Raith Estate to enjoy.

Did you know there is only one natural lake in Scotland.

This is not one of them, it is one of a handful of man-made lakes.

It used to be a beautifully stocked trout lake, but four years ago the landowner dropped the water level to avoid paying taxes, as a result the couple who ran the fishing business said it was no longer viable and the pier was left to rot. The boats were all taken away too.

You still get the odd fisherman and we are forever throwing away their discarded line, plastic and general rubbish. The lake is home to swans and birds, but these fuckers don't care!

You can walk all around the lake, it is more of a fluffing hike and this is the view from the other side, and as this is Wednesday I shall participate in the #wednesdaywalk challenge from @tattoodjay

What's the difference between a Loch and and Lake? We have a good number of lakes over here, but not quite as many as Minnesota. Of course we have the great ones that are basically small oceans. You took some really nice photos. It's a shame about the trout fishing there.

It all comes down to language. Gaelic was used and that is loch whereas in England Latin and Germanic and French was used to derive lac which which became lake. Yeah your great lakes are fluffing oceans lol! Yeah the fishing is a shame.

Ah, okay that's still a ton that you have there.

Oh, I would like to see one, I seldom see a lake in my country and mostly it's a cascading waterfall. 😌😁

Hehe this one is cool, we have lots, especially on the west and up in the highlands. One day you shall see..

So it's a man-made lake? It's just sad to think that it's now abandoned. The landowner's decision had a significant impact on both the local business and the environment.
