Win Streak!

With the NCAA basketball tournament play-in games still taking place today, I thought it would be a good idea to cover a little bit of softball news before we become totally focused on basketball for the rest of the week. My niece who is playing on her high school varsity team has had a couple of scrimmages already this year. Unfortunately, they have lost both of the games they have played, but my nieces performance has been pretty solid.

They seem to be making a lot of errors behind the plate and their pitching is still a little shaky this year. I chalk it up to early season jitters. I think those will go away eventually and before too long we will see some real production from the ladies.

Things like this are temporary. Meanwhile, now that the Tiffin Dragons are back from their Spring Break trip to Florida, they seem to have turned things around a bit and find themselves on a four game winning streak. Last weekend they had a double header sweep of the university that I graduated from Saginaw Valley State University. If it had been a home game for the Cardinals we likely would have driven over to watch.

Then, on Monday the Dragons had another double header sweep over the Grand Valley State University squad that is just across the state from where I live. From what I can see of the scores for all four games, the Tiffin pitching was totally on point with three shut outs and only one run given up across those four games. That's pretty dang impressive.

The bats seem to be hot as well with an average of four and a half runs scored per game. They have a couple of double headers this weekend starting on Friday with local rival University of Findlay on Friday and Thomas More University on Sunday. I will be trying to watch the streams in between basketball games.

The Radford Highlanders also find themselves on a winning streak with two victories in a Friday game over Gardner-Webb University on Friday. The first game went into extra innings before the Highlanders broke the tie in the 8th.

On Saturday they faced Gardner-Webb two more times racking up a 5 to 0 win in the first game and a 2 to 1 win in the second game.

Just this past Tuesday they faced Charlotte at home and they won that game 6 to 1. They are in action again today against UNC Greensboro in North Carolina.

The niece I mentioned above also has two more high school games this week that @mrsbozz and I will likely be streaming from the comfort of our couch. I'm looking forward to seeing if the Shamrocks can turn things around.

These are two of the only sports that I have difficulty getting behind. For me, the games are just too long as is the season generally speaking. I don't try to shame anyone that likes it and if I had a family member that was playing I would attend and probably feel differently about it.

I can appreciate that. It is different when you have relatives who are playing. My brother in law was so annoyed when his boys decided they wanted to start playing baseball because it's so long and boring. Softball is a bit more exciting to be honest. The fact that they added the pitch timer helps too.

Maybe a stupid question but do baseballers play soft ball and vice versa? I was thinking it may mess up your game as they are very different with regard to ball speed.

I'm gonna jump in here because I want to see if Bozz feels the same way. Generally, softball is the game played by women and amateurs at a picnic or something like that, and baseball is played by men. There is nothing stopping women from playing baseball these days but that is just how the whole thing started. Baseball can be quite complicated to play in a "pick up" sort of way because of all the gear and the ball being quite small and therefore much faster moving.

In softball the game tends to be a lot slower moving because of the underhand pitch rule and the fact that the ball is significantly larger. Oh... and the ball is not SOFT, I don't know how it got that name.

Anyone can join in a softball game because of the pitches being easier to hit.

Yes soft ball is bigger and lighter ball that is still hard and if I was going to get hit by a ball I would definitely choose a soft ball over a base ball lol. Thanks for answering the question and now I know.

You don't really see that with a few exceptions. Softball is mostly a women's sport and more of a rec thing. So, for example, you might see guys who used to play baseball playing on a rec league on the weekends or something like that. Those rec leagues are usually slow pitch or blooper ball, not the fast pitch that the ladies play.

Ok makes sense and now I know.

Yeah
