This was far better than 1984, in my opinion. 1984 was a classic, yes, but this had so much more happening besides the main plot of defying the party. this one interested me, hooked me, until the very end. and even then i would have loved for it to continue.

First of all: the portrayal of winston. we obviously do not get much of his personality besides ambitiousness and defiance in 1984, but this showed the side of him everyone saw. the miserable, self-observed and self-righteous man. I don’t think they ever loved each other in 1984, proven in the fact that Winston rambled on about the party everytime they met. giving us more insight into their relationship showed me how it could never have worked out. winston always expected everyone to be weak, you almost hate him in this book.

speaking of relationships, we glt Vicky I thought she would only be mentioned at the start due to her baby, but as I saw more of her I was convinced their ship would sail one day. I am very happy they met in the end, and that Julia thought about her lovingly. I think they always understood each other more than anyone else. I would’ve liked to see them actually bond though, since the revelation of a romance was there from the start, with no scenes to depict it properly.
