Over the weekend with my friends this topic came up. My son is already a grown up man now but my friends children are still small and going to school. They were discussing about the recent study trends and then we were discussing about how the whole education system was some 30 to 40 years back. Well, I am not exactly comparing anything from then to now in terms of good or bad. There is a huge difference, some ways are good and some are not on both the sides.
The major difference I see is that the education stress was much lesser for the child then. I remember I was not a bright student at all and at times performed very poorly with my grades and yet my parents never pressurized me on it. Their only intent was that I should pass out each class and not fail. I also feel that education system was much simpler but at the same time there were limited options. When I started going to the University there were only three options to select from which was arts, science and commerce. In today's time there are so many options of fields to select from and one can actually specialize in their field of their interest and not end up studying what they would not feel interested in.
We were also talking about the ways, mine was a time of blackboard and chalk, but my friend was telling me that now they have whiteboards and markers replaced for that. Also all our communication to our parents would happen through the school diary but now it's on WhatsApp or emails. Notebooks are being replaced with iPads. The major difference from then to now is the control teacher had over the students. Nowadays teachers have to be very careful with what they say and do with the students else it can become a trouble for them.
Education ways have simplified and there are so many options available, but I am thinking that it could also be confusing at the same time, unless I am very clear of what I want to do. Some children take long to realize that and hence the options made may not be serving best. I see my nephews and nieces, they are so much smarter then my generation at that age. Their IQ level is higher, their communication is better, confidence level is high and these new ways I am sure are contributing to it. Somewhere I am stuck with my time and feel that though things have advanced now but still the old systems were best.
With the amount of exposure children get right from a very early age somewhere they are losing their innocence and they grow up faster then their age, which is something I do not like.
