One Battle After the Other
When their enemy resurfaces after sixteen years, the members of a group of former revolutionaries reunite to save a comrade’s daughter. Is this the movie of the year? I think it is.
🟢🟢🟢🟢
- Sean Penn is FANTASTIC!
- Paul Thomas Anderson directs masterfully, and I believe this will make it to the Oscars this year.
- The entire cast delivers noteworthy performances, from DiCaprio and Del Toro to young Chase Infiniti and Teyana Taylor.
- Excellent screenplay. The big question it raises is: which revolution is worth fighting for?
- The final highway chase is outstanding, a true lesson in filmmaking with an incredibly directed triple pursuit.
- Its runtime never feels tiring.
- It blends cinematic genres and styles very successfully.
🔴🔴🔴🔴
- It slightly romanticizes anarchism, which stood out to me a bit.
- I can’t really find any major negatives 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Wicked For Good
Elphaba is now the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, exiled in the forests of Oz, where she fights for the freedom of the Silent Animals and struggles to spread the harsh truth about the Wizard. Glinda, on the other hand, resides in the palace of the Emerald City, has become a radiant symbol of Good, and enjoys all the privileges of fame and popularity. Is it worth watching?
🟢🟢🟢🟢
- Ariana Grande, once again in the sequel, is one of the best parts of the film.
- The production design is once again top-tier, from sets to costumes.
- The chemistry between Grande and Erivo is evident and translates well on screen.
- Chu does a very solid job direction-wise.
- Both performances, vocally and acting-wise, are excellent.
- Some of the choreography is very strong.
- It has a more “mature” and darker approach, which I liked.
- The action sequences are satisfying.
- It delivers nice messages.
- Visually, it is much more vibrant and colorful than the first film.
🔴🔴🔴🔴
- I found the musical numbers slightly weaker than in the first movie.
- I didn’t feel much character development for Erivo’s character.
- Some reveals felt underwhelming.
- At times, the narrative feels rushed.
- Michelle Yeoh is the weak link here, with a rather average performance.
- In a few moments, the pacing feels a bit flat.
- The love triangle didn’t really work for me.
