Rediscovering "Solomon's Gardens" (Esp/Eng)

Una de las actividades que solemos realizar mi esposa y yo es disfrutar de la literatura para luego analizar los aspectos más interesantes de la obra. Recientemente revisamos el libro de cuentos Los Jardines de Salomón, escrito por Liliana Lara, talentosa autora venezolana cuyo estilo es muy particular ya que se vale de recursos como combinar el foco narrativo o presentar fragmentos que hagan dudar al lector.

One of the activities my wife and I usually do is enjoy literature and then analyze the most interesting aspects of the work. We recently reviewed the book of short stories Solomon's Gardens, written by Liliana Lara, a talented Venezuelan author whose style is very particular since she uses resources such as combining the narrative focus or presenting fragments that make the reader doubt.

Resulta fascinante crear el efecto de incertidumbre en el lector, inducirlo a la relectura para que intente descubrir lo que subyace detrás de la historia que se narra. Se entiende que cada cuento es una estructura independiente, pero en algunos relatos es reiterativa la presencia de una pareja de niños, un niño y una niña, y el varón se llama Guillermo.

It is fascinating to create the effect of uncertainty in the reader, to induce him to reread so that he tries to discover what lies behind the story being told. It is understood that each story is an independent structure, but in some stories the presence of a pair of children, a boy and a girl, is reiterated, and the boy is called Guillermo.

En El perro de Nina Hagen, El encierro y Vietnam se presenta tal factor común, mientras que en el cuento Los Jardines de Salomón, cuyo título es homónimo del nombre del libro, se presenta una compleja narrativa en la cual se insertan dos historias paralelas que convergen al final.

In Nina Hagen's Dog, The Lockdown and Vietnam such a common factor is presented, while in the story The Gardens of Solomon, whose title is homonymous with the name of the book, a complex narrative is presented in which two parallel stories are inserted that converge at the end.

Sin duda, el arte de Liliana Lara resalta también por sus propuestas estéticas y su temática, ya que se deja entrever una Venezuela en plena crisis política, económica y social que amenazaba con agudizarse, ofreciendo en sus escritos un pronóstico de una descomposición moral que también se venía gestando.

Liliana Lara's art undoubtedly stands out for its aesthetic proposals and its themes, as it reveals a Venezuela in the midst of a political, economic and social crisis that threatened to worsen, offering in her writings a forecast of a moral decomposition that was also brewing.

Esos mismos destellos de una decadencia que tocaba la puerta se pueden apreciar a lo largo de la obra, pero también se presenta un humor inteligente que nunca llega a desentonar sino que más bien enriquece las historias porque esa chispa jocosa identifica a los venezolanos.

These same flashes of decadence that were knocking at the door can be seen throughout the work, but there is also an intelligent humor that never becomes out of place but rather enriches the stories because that humorous spark identifies Venezuelans.

Redescubrir la lectura de Los Jardines de Salomón nos hizo pasar un buen rato, mi esposa lo leyó en sus años universitarios en tanto yo lo hice cuando investigaba sobre la literatura venezolana actual. Han transcurrido más de quince años desde entonces y todavía advertimos detalles que pasamos por alto. También nos volvimos a encontrar con personajes muy bien diseñados que aún mantienen su vigencia.

Rediscovering the reading of Los Jardines de Salomón made us have a good time. My wife read it during her university years, while I did it when I was researching current Venezuelan literature. More than fifteen years have passed since then and we still notice details that we overlooked. We also rediscovered very well-designed characters that still maintain their relevance.

Los Jardines de Salomón es una obra que se disfruta en cada página, tal vez ciertas referencias hacia la cultura árabe, religión e ideología afecten la verosimilitud y construcción de referencias en algunos lectores, pero en líneas generales este libro tiene todos los elementos de una narrativa de calidad.

The Gardens of Solomon is a work that is enjoyed on every page. Perhaps certain references to Arab culture, religion and ideology affect the plausibility and construction of reference in some readers, but in general terms this book has all the elements of a quality narrative.
