I had the opportunity to attend a photography exhibition organized by the Cultural Office of Sucre State. I enjoyed the perspectives of Rafael Salvatore and Sebastián Fernández, who presented a collection of images from the past that evoked the era of our grandparents. Most of the photos are in black and white, while those exhibited in color show the opaque tone typical of the transition period from box cameras to 35mm reflex film cameras.
The physical space is undergoing renovation, an old mansion that was definitely in tune with the exhibition. The theme stands out because the images show ordinary people in their daily lives. I couldn't help but think of my grandparents and their traditions, the clothing of the people of Cumaná in the middle of the last century, and their daily occupations.
These photographs, without poses or pretensions, project a charm and authenticity that I find appealing because, beyond the image, they represent the history of Cumaná, from a rural area with dirt roads to a city that is the capital of Sucre state. There are photos dating from the 1950s to the mid-1980s.
The original version of the Bermudez Avenue bridge, with concrete railings, the hundred-year-old tamarind tree, an elderly potter, a regional music group, the iconic Maria Rodriguez in her early days, among other artists native to Cumana, appear there, frozen in time in their younger years.
I couldn't help feeling nostalgic because my dad was also a photography fanatic, and in the 1980s he had a briefcase with a professional camera and lots of lenses. He developed so many photos that my mom, in the middle of a move, threw a good batch of them in the trash. I still have some of them, and there are several of my grandparents' house and its surroundings, from that era when men wore hats and espadrilles.

Tuve la oportunidad de asistir a una exposición fotográfica organizada por el Gabinete Cultural del estado Sucre. Disfruté de las perspectivas de Rafael Salvatore y de Sebastián Fernández, quienes presentaron un colección de imágenes del pasado que evocaban la época de nuestros abuelos, la mayoría de las fotos son en blanco y negro, en tanto las que se exhiben a color muestran el tono opaco, propio del período de transición de la cámara de cajón a la de película reflex de 35mm.
El espacio físico está en remodelación, un casona antigua que definitivamente estaba en sintonía con la exposición. Destaca la temática puesto que las imágenes muestran a personas comunes en su cotidianidad, no pude evitar pensar en mis abuelos y sus tradiciones, la vestimenta de los cumaneses a mediados del siglo pasado y sus oficios cotidianos.
Estas fotografías sin poses ni pretensiones proyectan ese encanto a autenticidad que me resulta agradable porque más allá de la imagen representan la historia de Cumaná, de espacio rural con caminos de tierra en su transitar a una ciudad que es la capital del estado Sucre. Se pueden advertir fotos que van desde la década de los cincuenta hasta mediados de los ochenta.
El puente de la Avenida Bermúdez en su versión original, con barandas de concreto, el árbol de tamarindo centenario, una abuelita alfarera, un conjunto de música regional, la emblemática María Rodríguez en sus inicios entre otros cultores oriundos de Cumaná, aparecen allí, detenidos en el tiempo en sus años mozos.
No pude evitar sentir nostalgia porque mi papá también fue fanático de la fotografía y en los años ochenta tenía un maletín con una cámara profesional y muchos lentes, llegó a revelar tantas fotos que mi mamá, en medio de una mudanza, envío un buen lote a la basura. Todavía conservo algunas de ellas y justamente hay varias de la casa de mis abuelos y sus alrededores, de aquella época donde los hombres usaban sombreros y alpargatas.
