When I looked through them all and saw an Alice Walker novel, I couldn't believe it; it was the first book I read in one sitting from that precious legacy. In future posts, I'll share my thoughts on some of the books I lovingly care for.
Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart is the first edition of the novel translated into Spanish by Manuel García Verdecia, published by the Cuban publishing house Arte y Literatura. It is a novel that seduced me from the title, regardless of knowing beforehand that its author had written several best sellers such as: The color purple, In possession of the secret of happiness, We are what we've been waiting for: inner light in a time of darkness, Meridiana and In the light of my father's smile, among other important works by the american writer.
In this fictional novel, Kate Arbolquehabla, as she is named at the beginning of the story, is a writer, and Yolo is a painter by profession and Kate's life partner, or rather, lover, as she often calls him. These main characters intertwine stories that narratively propel, with exquisite rhythm, the journey through human existence, a true journey of the being following the relentless search for answers to questions, events, and wounds hidden in the deepest recesses of the soul.
The novel tells the story of a boat trip through the Amazon rainforest by a group of people headed to a spiritual retreat, where they take ayahuasca to achieve healing. Thus, a strong bond of affinity and familiarity is formed between Lalika, Missy, Hugh, Rick, Armando, Cosmi, and Kate, without knowing if they will ever share it all together again. Naturally, nature plays a fundamental role. In my opinion, I appreciate its central role in the novel's plot, as the author describes with impeccable skill her connection with trees, plants, animals, rivers, and so on, lending strength and credibility to her imaginative plot.
On the other hand, Yolo, the man Kate fell in love with, attracted by the blue that brought life to his paintings, travels to Hawaii on vacation and there meets an old love to whom he refuses to yield. He experiences the pain of death and understands the need to save, instilling and preaching good habits to the new generations. Both Yolo and Kate can't stop thinking about each other, and even though they've taken equidistant paths, they both converge in the purge that their journeys hold for them. Their journeys, which appear to differ in purpose and essence, but I believe are the same.
All events are intertwined and sway back and forth between past and present. As a reader, I had to use my acquired expertise to place myself in the time periods the author intentionally intermittently interweaves.
In Walker's work, I appreciate a profound look at the roots of humanity, at being itself, on the path to personal growth. The Amazon rainforest is an expedition into the hearts of our ancestors to understand the pain of captivity, forced labor, injustice, and crimes suffered in the past, especially by women. It is also about listening to the ancestral voices that assist and guide us.
Another aspect I perceive in the work is learning without judging human nature, from a place of complete equality, being able to rethink ideologies and ensuring that future times are of higher quality, following the conscious change that emanates from the teaching.
The author has a distinct spiritual and feminist trajectory that is reflected in her established literary career. In my opinion, this novel goes beyond that, embracing the human being in all its dimensions. It's not just a simple trip to the Amazon rainforest or Hawaii; it's about questioning behaviors, circumstances, and even love—yes, the kind where you choose someone to bid farewell to the moon and give thanks for the arrival of the sun every day.
What does the journey mean?
The journey means living without attachments, identifying and preventing the harmful social ills plaguing the world, such as addictions, greed, and dirty money, etc. It means preserving and respecting the balance established between humanity and nature by our ancestors. It means experiencing old age as a brave and mature act of a human being endowed with full intellectual capacities for creation. It is remembering that we came to live fully, or simply realizing that now is the time to open our hearts.

Recuerdo que me dijo: _ solo a ti me atrevo a dejártelos, sé que los cuidarás como yo y sabrás crecer con ellos. _ Cuando los revisé todos y ví una novela de Alice Walker, no me lo podía creer; fue el primer libro que leí de un tirón de aquel valioso caudal hereditario. Ahora es el tiempo de abrir tu corazón, es la primera edición de la novela traducida al español por Manuel García Verdecia, publicada por la Editorial cubana Arte y Literatura. Es una novela que me sedujo desde el título con independencia de saber de antemano que su autora había escrito varios best sellers como: El color púrpura , En posesión del secreto de la felicidad, Somos aquellos que hemos estado esperando: luz interior en tiempos de oscuridad, Meridiana y A la luz de la sonrisa de mi padre, entre otras importantes obras de la escritora estadounidense.
En esta novela de ficción, Kate Arbolquehabla como se nombra en los inicios de la historia es una escritora y Yolo es pintor de profesión y compañero de vida de Kate o mejor dicho amante como ella suele llamarlo. Estos personajes principales ensartan las historias que narrativamente impulsan con un ritmo exquisito el viaje a la existencia humana, un verdadero viaje del ser tras la búsqueda incesante de respuestas a cuestionamientos, sucesos y heridas escondidas en lo más recóndito del alma.
Se narra una travesía realizada en bote por la selva amazónica por un grupo de personas que se dirigen a una especie de retiro espiritual, donde toman la Ayahuasca para obtener la sanación; así se crea entre Lalika, Missy, Hugh, Rick, Armando, Cosmi y Kate sólidos lazos de afinidad y familiaridad sin saber si algún día volverán a compartir todos juntos. Pues lógicamente la naturaleza juega un rol fundamental, en mi opinión aprecio que interviene con un peso protagónico en la trama de la novela, al describir la autora con una destreza impecable su conexión con los árboles, plantas, animales, ríos... lo cual le otorga fuerza y credibilidad a su argumento, enarbolado desde la imaginación.
Por otra parte Yolo el hombre del que se enamoró Kate atraída por el azul con que le daba vida a sus lienzos, paralelamente viaja a Hawai para vacacionar y ahí se encuentra con un viejo amor al que no sucumbe, experimenta el dolor de la muerte y comprende la necesidad de salvar inculcando y predicando con buenos hábitos a las nuevas generaciones. Tanto Yolo como Kate no dejan de pensarse aún y cuando tomaron caminos equidistantes ambos convergen en la purga que les depara sus viajes, los cuales aparentan diferir en fines y en esencia pero considero que es el mismo.
Todos los acontecimientos se calan y mecen en forma de vaivén entre el pasado y el presente. Pues como lectora tuve que activar la pericia adquirida para ubicarme en los tiempos que de forma intermitente mezcla la autora con toda intención.
Aprecio en esta obra de la Walker una mirada profunda a la raíz de la humanidad, al ser mismo en el sendero por alcanzar el crecimiento personal. Pues la selva amazónica es una expedición al corazón de nuestros ancestros para comprender el dolor tras el cautiverio, trabajo forzoso, injusticias, crímenes sufridos en el pasado sobre todo por las mujeres. También es escuchar las ancestrales voces que nos asisten y guían.
Otra arista que percibo en la obra es aprender sin juzgar la naturaleza humana, desde la igualdad plena, siendo capaces de replantear ideologías y velando porque los tiempos venideros sean de mayor calidad, tras el cambio consciente que emana la enseñanza.
La autora posee una marcada trayectoria espiritual y feminista que se refleja en su consolidada carrera literaria; en mi opinión esta novela va más allá pues abarca el ser en toda su dimensión, no es un simple viaje a la selva amazónica y a Hawai, es cuestionarse comportamientos, circunstancias y también el amor, sí, ese por el que eliges a una persona para despedir la luna y agradecer el advenimiento del sol todos los días.
¿Qué significa el viaje?
El viaje significa vivir sin apegos, identificar y prevenir los nefastos males sociales que golpean al mundo así como: adicciones, avaricia y el dinero sucio, etcétera ... Significa preservar y respetar el equilibrio trazado entre el hombre y la naturaleza desde nuestros antecesores. Experimentar la vejez como un acto valiente y maduro del ser humano dotado de plenas capacidades intelectuales para la creación. Es recordar que vinimos a vivir a plenitud o sencillamente es darnos cuenta que ahora es el tiempo de abrir el corazón.
