The Patriarch's Room (Eng/Esp)

English version

During my visit to the Antonio Jose de Sucre House-Museum, my steps lead me to the bedroom of Don Vicente de Sucre and Urbaneja, the patriarch of the family. This bedroom is the largest, and it’s understandable that it would be so in order to reflect the hierarchy within the household. Here, a portrait of him hangs on one of the walls—a very understated image of him in an elegant suit, as was the custom of the time for depicting high-ranking military officers and members of high society.

The walls of this room are cream-colored, and the floor features a decorative mosaic rug with geometric patterns, which creates a sense of depth. To me, it’s the perfect element to accentuate the elegance of this space, designed to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Among the standout pieces of furniture is a wooden bed with a high, delicately carved headboard, draped with a yellow bedspread featuring beautiful details. On either side is a small nightstand; atop one of them sits a striking glass lamp. The woodworking on all these pieces is outstanding.

The cabinet—or display case, as they called it back then—is another piece of furniture that stands out for its wood and finish. It reminded me of one at my grandmother’s house, a family heirloom that has remained intact despite the toll time has taken on it.

There are also some carved wooden armchairs in the finest classical style, upholstered with a patterned fabric. There’s a unique cylindrical table there; I’d never seen this design before, so it struck me as quite exotic. Its size suggests it’s meant only for holding small, lightweight objects.

It’s understood that this decor is a reproduction based on the information available about the Sucre mansion; in other words, the furniture isn’t original, unlike the pieces on display at the Andres Eloy Blanco House-Museum, where every item has a certified provenance.

From the balcony, you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view; houses and mountains come together to create a beautiful landscape. I can see a spectacular view of San Francisco and its surroundings. I really liked this perspective of the city, far from the concrete and hustle and bustle that characterize modern cities.
