In this initiative by @nelinoeva, Round #275, in which she invites us to share photos of small birds, I’m showing you some photos of this little dark-feathered bird I came across while walking in Caracas.
I spotted it among the foliage of a palm tree; its dark color stood out against the green of the leaves, and its red legs caught my attention. This is my favorite photo.
Here in Venezuela, it’s known as the tordillo (Melanospiza bicolor), but in other parts of the Americas, it’s called the bicolor seed-eater and the black sparrow.
I watched it for a while as I took pictures. It flew down to the ground to eat seeds, which are its main food source. I saw some small, dark-colored seeds that might have come from the palm tree or the red-flowered shrub.
The color of its wings is olive green, and the rest of its body is darker. According to my research, it’s a male bird. As is generally the case with birds, the females have lighter-colored plumage.
I stayed for a while watching it from a distance so as not to scare it away, trying to take some more photos. When I got a little closer, it flew to another tree and I lost sight of it.

En esta iniciativa de @nelinoeva, la ronda # 275, en la cual nos invita a mostrar fotografías de pájaros pequeños, les muestro algunas fotografías de este pequeño de plumaje oscuro que me encontré mientras estaba caminando en la ciudad de Caracas.
Lo vi entre el follaje de una palma y su color oscuro resaltaba con el verde de las hojas y me llamó la atención sus patas de color rojo.
Acá en Venezuela se le conoce como tordillo (Melanospiza bicolor ), pero en otros lugares de América se le llama Semillero bicolor y Gorrión negro.
Lo estuve observando un rato mientras lo fotografiaba. Voló hasta el suelo para comer semillas que es su alimento principal. Vi unas semillas pequeñas de color oscuro que pudieran ser de la palma o del arbusto de flores rojas.
El color de sus alas es verde oliva y el resto es mas oscuro. De acuerdo a lo que investigue es un pajarito macho. Las hembras como generalmente ocurre en las aves el plumaje es de colores mas claros.
Me quedé un rato observándolo de lejos para no asustarlo y tratando de tomarle otras fotografías. Cuando me acerque un poco voló hacia otro árbol y lo perdí de vista.
