Comics by AI + Caricaturas por IA [Eng+Spa]

Creativity is a trait that humans excel at. I read somewhere that it was a manifestation of intelligence. If we define intelligence as the ability to solve (and create) problems, then creativity is the ability to create novel solutions to problems, or the ability to generate new problems.

This entire introductory rant is to address a topic regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence that I was recently discussing with my brother. It concerns the (too frequent) use of AI agents in the creation of images for comics, manga, or manhwa.

As it happens, while reviewing some video summaries of Asian comics, I noticed an error in the continuity of the images. And I mentioned to my brother that this was a symptom of the use of automated AI systems.

A continuity error is a term that comes from the field of cinema, and it occurs when there is an inconsistency in the sequences of images. In turn, cinema borrowed this term (at the beginning of the 20th century) from the idea of ​​“continuity” established in the literary arts.

Let's take things a bit further. Continuity is a trait that refers to the coherence of characteristics (or consistency), whether it's a landscape, a character, or an object. When applied to cinema, it can be understood as the need for the images captured by the camera (and arranged in the editing process) to maintain a logical continuity.

If in a scene there is a shot in which a protagonist sits down to drink coffee, holding the cup in their right hand. It shouldn't happen that in the next shot (of the same scene), this character holds the cup in their left hand. That is, unless in some intermediate shot the character is shown switching the cup from one hand to the other.

In the case of images generated from prompts by AI agents, several continuity issues arise when generating multiple images, even if the same seeds or base instructions are used.

These types of problems don't arise in paid AI agents, at least not in the higher-tier ones (both in terms of computing power and service price). In free or low-cost models (and agents), the additional modules that allow for better consistency control are usually disabled.

Thus, if you look at the example images provided by a site like https://storydiffusion.com/, you'll notice that while the AI ​​can generate some usable images, it happens that in the same image panel, the character has too many changes. For example, in one image, they have a mask, and in the next, they don't; in one image, they may be wearing a long-sleeved suit, and in the next, they're wearing a short-sleeved suit.

This site seems to have agents available that avoid or reduce continuity issues, but it's clear that the free (trial) images don't have this feature enabled.

Personally, I still prefer creations made by people, even if they use computerized tools. And since I was once a tester for an AI comic creation platform, I can tell the differences between what's drawn by humans and what's created entirely by AI agents.

Well, I suppose that with the advancements and improvements in the near future, it will become increasingly difficult for me to tell the difference. Let's wait and see.

La creatividad es un rasgo en que los humanos nos destacamos. En algún lugar leí que era una manifestación de inteligencia. Si definimos la inteligencia como la habilidad para resolver (y crear) problemas, entonces la creatividad viene a ser la habilidad de crear soluciones novedosas a problemas, o la habilidad de generar nuevos problemas.

Toda esta perorata introductoria es para abordar un tema del uso de la Inteligencia Artificial que estuve discutiendo hace poco con mi hermano. Se trata del empleo (demasiado frecuente) de agentes de IA en la elaboración de imágenes para comics, mangas o manhwa.

Sucede que, al revisar un poco algunos vídeos de resúmenes de comics asiáticos, noté un error en la continuidad de las imágenes. Y le comenté a mi hermano que eso era un síntoma del uso de sistemas automatizados por IA.

Un error de continuidad es un término que viene del campo del cine, y se da cuando hay una inconsistencia en las secuencias de imágenes. A su vez, el cine tomó este término (a inicios del siglo XX) de la idea de ‘continuidad’ que se establece en las artes literarias.

Llevemos las cosas con más detalle. La continuidad es un rasgo que hace referencia a la coherencia de características (o consistencia), ya sea que se trate de un paisaje, personaje u objeto. Cuando se lleva esto al cine, se puede entender como la necesidad de que las imágenes capturadas por la cámara (y ordenadas en el proceso de edición) mantengan una continuidad lógica.

Si en una escena hay una toma en la que un protagonista se sienta a tomar café, y sostiene la taza con la mano derecha. No debe suceder que en la siguiente toma (de la misma escena) este personaje tenga la taza sostenida por la mano izquierda. Eso a menos que en alguna toma intermedia se muestre que el personaje cambio la taza de una mano a otra.

En el caso de las imágenes generadas a partir de prompts, por agentes de #IA, sucede que se presentan varios problemas de continuidad al generar varias imágenes, incluso si se usan las mismas semillas o las mismas instrucciones base.

Esta clase de problemas no se presenta en agentes de IA de pago, por lo menos en los que son de los niveles superiores (tanto en capacidades de cómputo como en precio del servicio). En los modelos (y agentes) de tipo gratuitos o de costos bajos, los módulos adicionales que permiten controlar mejor la consistencia, suelen estar desactivados.

Así, si te fijas en las imágenes de ejemplo que proporciona un sitio como el de https://storydiffusion.com/, notarás que, si bien la IA puede generar algunas imágenes utilizables, sucede que en el mismo panel de imágenes se encuentra que el personaje tiene demasiados cambios. Por ejemplo, en una imagen tiene antifaz y en la imagen siguiente no la tiene, en una imagen puede que tenga un traje de manga larga, y en la siguiente está vistiendo un traje de manga corta.

Aclaro, este sitio parece tener disponibles agentes que evitan o reducen los problemas de continuidad, pero es claro que las imágenes gratuitas (de prueba) no tienen activa esta función.

En lo personal, sigo prefiriendo las creaciones hechas por personas, incluso si emplean apoyo de herramientas computarizadas. Y como me tocó (en alguna ocasión) ser probador de una plataforma de creación de comics por IA, puedo notar las diferencias entre lo dibujado por humanos o lo que es creado enteramente por agentes de IA.

Bueno, supongo que, con los avances y mejoras de algún futuro cercano, me resultará cada vez más difícil notar la diferencia. Esperemos y veamos.
