As a medical student, I am trained to look beyond surface symptoms to find the root cause of an illness. Of recent,i applied this same logic to my finances after watching a YouTube series that deeply impacted me: "The Smart Money Woman," adapted from the novel by Arese Ugwu.
The series follows Zuri, a young, stylish woman who seems to have it all. Following a messy breakup, she travels abroad to "rewind and reset" a move strongly advised by her friends. However, Zuri returns to Lagos only to face a harsh clinical reality: she is drowning in debt. With her landlord on her neck for the houserent, she is left with debt beyond her salary amount. she realizes her impulsive spending has left her financially unstable.

Diagnosing the Problem
Zuri’s struggle taught me a vital lesson: never try to impress others at the expense of your own stability. In my own life, there are times I feel the urge to show off, but I am reminded that "prescribing" myself a lifestyle I cannot afford will only lead to long-term complications. We must "cut our cloth according to our coat," regardless of the social pressure to do otherwise.

The Emergency Fund: A Financial Vaccine
One of the most profound lessons involves the Emergency Fund. In medicine, we know that urgent care doesn't wait for a convenient time. If a loved one falls ill, you don't want to be forced to borrow money just to provide them with basic care.
As the series says:
*"An emergency fund is the primary weapon against debt. People get trapped in a cycle of borrowing because they don’t have the savings to cover unexpected costs."
This was evident when Zuri’s mother fell ill, and Zuri had to take on even more debt to pay for her treatment. Saving for a "rainy day" is the only way to break the "borrowing to survive" cycle.
Consistency is the Best Medicine
You don’t need millions to start. Whether it is a hundred Naira or a hundred dollars, the amount matters less than the habit. Nothing stunts growth more than inconsistency.
I highly recommend this series to anyone looking to reshape their financial perspective and to change the way they view money in genral. You can find it on the Azuwa Studios channel on YouTube.
