At times I wonder what if there was absolutely no grief in our lives, what if there was no darkness, no wars, no bad things happening and everything is in perfect order. Everything was perfect, peaceful and good. In that case would we have feelings of Gratitude and would we able to appreciate life in anyway? Would we pause and look at the little things around? Think about it if all the resources were available to us unlimited, would we value them?
I do not think so, it's the lack of things that makes us value it. Lack of food and water makes us value it. Because of wars, crimes, injustice, we value peace and justice. We spend time in nature because we get stressed out in our routine lives. If we would not probably, we would stop appreciating nature.
The fact is that the darkness teaches us how to see the light. Grief hurts a lot, wars destroy humanity, bad days make us tired but they are also the reason we learn to appreciate the goodness in our lives. They are the reasons we know how to count on our blessings and how to express gratitude.
If there were no cold nights we would not need blankets, and not everyone can afford a blanket, which teaches us how valuable a blanket can be for some people and how privileged are those who have the blankets to warm up.
A life with zero pain means we will not even know what happiness, joy and compassion is. A life like that will be numb and emotionless. At the same time it does not mean we should have pain in our lives, or wars going on. But may be we can stop cursing our bad days and understand that because they exist good days feel like gifts. In my life because I had a bad childhood and early years of life and now that my life is good, I know how to be grateful for it. Because if I would have not tasted the bitter part of life I would have never known the sweetness of life.
