Meerkats are a small mongoose native to southern Africa. They are known as social animals, preferring to stay in packs that can range up to around 30 in their home range. They can be very curious and playful, often known for the way they will stand up and peek around at what's going on. Living in rock crevices or burrows, they can inhabit large, multiple-level areas with several tunnels to call their home. The temperatures in their tunnel systems are intended to provide protection from the cold and elements by helping to create a microclimate in which they can flourish.
