The Grosse Point Light

in Photo-essay4 months ago

The Lady Elgin sank after colliding with the lumber schooner Augusta in Lake Michigan in 1860. The shipwreck was the most deadly in all of Great Lakes history.

Though the exact number of victims is unknown, it is estimated there were around 400 people on board, on their way to Milwaukee after a visit to Chicago and there were only about 98 survivor's.

The wreck was discovered in 1989 lying in 50-60 feet of water. The site has been cataloged by the Underwater Archaeological Society of Chicago and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but treasure hunters have stripped the site of artifacts.

. Long before marine radios, lighthouses were the only means to safely navigate the harbors, many of which were rocky.

Following the sinking of the Lady Elgin, and several shipping disasters near Evanston, Illinois residents successfully lobbied the federal government for a lighthouse.

On March 1st, 1874 the beam of light from the Fresnel lens in the Grosse Point Lighthouse could be seen up to 20 miles over the lake in clear conditions and it served both to warn ships of shallow waters around the point and to guide the way into the Port of Chicago

The Great Lakes have been home to 379 lighthouses, 102 of which are found on Lake Michigan
The drive around the Lake is roughly 1100 miles. If you didn't stop at all to see lighthouses it would take you 15 hours.

Light House Beach

The Harley Clarke Mansion house is adjacent to the historic Grosse Pointe Light and Lighthouse Beach on Lake Michigan is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sort:

This lighthouse probably has one of the darkest background stories amongst all of the lighthouses.

It looks as if it would have been taken from a horror/thriller movie. But they often say that the reality is darker than any horror/thriller movie.

By the way, I still have not saw any lighthouses in my life so far.

There are no lighthouses in my home country (in Hungary) at all.

Currently I live on Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. There are lighthouses on this island, but I have not seen them so far.

Maybe I will see at least one in the near (or distant) future.

We will see.

I hope you get to visit the lighthouses on Tenerife.

I think all lighthouses have stories to tell.

It struck me that whenever I think of lighthouses, I think of the sea coast. So having a lighthouse on a lake is something I hadn't thought of.

Where I live, there are no big lakes, so I thought it was interesting that there was a lake that needed a lighthouse, although it is true that it is always good to have a guide to recognize dangerous places on the coast, whether they are rocks or shallow waters.

Thanks for sharing the photos and the history.

The Great Lakes are huge, and ships that travel the oceans come through the St Lawrence Seaway and use ports on the lakes. There are many lighthouses all around the Lakes.

I'm drawing a blank on this lighthouse for some reason...

No, great article, thanks for the info

It is now an automated light and guides small craft into Chicago's harbors.

Hi @melinda010100, very nice photos.
When I saw the house with the lighthouse at the back, I thought it was the keeper's house, and I was going to ask about it, as most of the lighthouse keepers' houses look small in the photos.
Then I read below that you said it was a mansion and that it is part of the historical heritage.
You learn something new every day, the pictures are really nice.

The house with 2 doors and the light at the back was the keepers house. At the peak of operation there was a principal keeper and two secondary keepers and a day laborer. I'm sure the work load was reduced when they got electricity.

Greetings @melinda010100, you know, the interesting thing, and the best thing, is that despite all the technology, that lighthouses are no longer needed, they are still maintained, and that helps to maintain the history of the places where the lighthouses are and also helps economically to the regions where the lighthouses are through tourism.
Happy weekend.

This light is still in operation and helps guide small craft into Chicago harbor.
I can't tell you how many lighthouses around the Great Lakes I have visited and paddled my kayak to. They are great tourist destinations

It's nice to know the background history of the construction of the lighthouse. Wasn't there an accident afternoon building the lighthouse?

I'm unaware of a construction accident, although I'm no expert on it's history. It certainly is possible.

Hello lady @melinda010100
What a beautiful lighthouse, I'm a fan of lighthouses, we have a very old one in the city
What beautiful photographs

Thanks. They are beautiful and often have so many stories to tell.

I guess the existence of the lighthouses prevented such tragic incidents.

They were certainly helpful before the days of GPS, I'm sure!

Ah yes light houses were a huge help back then. We also had some in our province since it was an island.

Though served only as tourist attractions by now.

This olis still a working light and is helpful in guiding small craft into port.

Nice photos 👍 I like the shot of the light house behind what I presume was the keepers house - looks like the light house is part of the house. I like the beach shot also. Here's a little known fact about me that even you probably don't know. I worked in real estate for awhile. I thought of it because I had lunch in Grosse Point once on a trip to Detroit.

I didn't know that! 😂
The city of Grosse Point is in Michigan. The lighthouse is in Evanston IL. No answers to why that is!
Glad you liked the photos. The house with the two front doors was the keepers house. At the peak of operation there was a principal keeper, 2 secondary keepers and a day laborer. Staff was reduced after it was electrified.

🤦 I was way off... I was thinking oh no I got the wrong Great Lake. Then I visited my smartie pants friend google and Grosse Pointe, Michigan isn't even on a Great Lake 🙄 its on Lake St Clair. I promise I actually read what people write in their posts lol Shame on me.

It was confusing me, too!

I love lighthouses! I don't love climbing to the top of them, made that mistake once... They are great parts of history. Interesting history on the wreck, at 50 to 60 feet deep I can see why it was stripped so easily. That's a pretty shallow dive.
!BBH

I was thinking the same about the depth, just surprised that it took so long to find it. I've done circle tours of both Superior and Michigan and been to many of the lighthouses. The history and the lives of the keepers always fascinates me.
