Praise, Punish, And Love: The Balance Kids Need.

in Hive Learners9 days ago

Raising children, praising children, and punishing children has always been a topic of discussion. Some agree to punish their bad behavior, while some don't. Some agree to also reward them for their good behaviors, while some don't agree to that too, some feel after all they are our children, and they are doing what is expected of them. For me, I would say both should be done, punish them for their bad behaviors and reward them for the good ones too.

It's just best to balance both and knowing when to punish and when not to. Children's are different, and what is working for A, will most likely or work for B. When you punish a child too much, he or she may become withdrawn or even keep doing that which you're punishing him or her for, because their believe then will be that, is it more than getting punished again? They are used to it already, so it doesn't mean. And same goes to rewarding them too, if you keep rewarding w child for every good behavior, he/she might get spoilt or start having a lot this entitlement stuff, they feel they deserve to be rewarded every single time.

At the moment, I'm serving in a school. And as a teacher I've seen a lot. I've seen those who feel happy and do more just because of something as small as a welldone, and I've also seen students who will keep doing something wrong until you decide to actually punish them. And doing that doesn't mean you love to see them get punished, it is because you love them enough to want them to change and also understand the consequences of their actions. I'm not the type to beat children, not at all. I actually grew up getting flogged at home and in school, but I didn't allow that to become a part of me an start dishing out canes to children. My belief is that.. beating, humiliating or giving children harsh punishment won't in any way help them, rather it makes them withdraw, live in fear and at the end of the day, may even turn out worse.

Even outside of school, I'm always with children. I enjoy my time with children a lot, some still find it weird the way I laugh and play with kids, but then, it has helped me understand most of this kids even better then their parents. Most of them open up to me and tell me things they wouldn't want their parents to know about, also if you know children well, you will know that they respond to and remember kindness for a long time, same way they remember whatever odd or bad things you do for them. And when you look at both, they always listen to corrections from someone who's kind to them, they understand that you want the best for them and take the correction, some will even promise you they won't repeat it again. They take corrections from those who punish them too, but it is mostly out of fear.

I'm not saying a child shouldn't be corrected, I'm saying a child should be corrected in and with love. You shouldn't just reward a child every single time, and you shouldn't also punish them on every single thing. Both should work together and be used when the need arises. The presence of one shouldn't cancel the need for the other. A child should know they will be appreciated for doing something good and also be corrected/punished when they do otherwise.

Sort:

Use one hand to punish the child and the other hand to draw them close. Punishment and reward should be part of teaching a child; too much of both indeed has a negative effect, which is why it is advisable to do both wisely.
