This vast land, which once harbored a market and an abattoir, now lies bare, a serene landscape, with only green vegetation as its occupants.
The market, called "Ahịa Udele", was a beehive of activities - a commercial hub where people gathered daily to buy, sell, and connect.
Groceries, fresh farm produce, and fresh meat were the staple of the market.
Its location, situated just on the riverbank, adjacent to the Waterside (Aba River) bridge offered a unique vantage position, easily accessible to shoppers.
The vast land is now a free zone – a shortcut for pedestrians, a hunting ground for scavengers digging for metals, an abode for the mentally vulnerable, and an escape route for pickpockets and petty thieves.
In the background, beyond the river, the defunct Enyimba hotel loomed, a haunting reminder of unfinished dreams.
No one knows if that dream will one day be revived, if Enyimba hotel will ever be refurbished. But hope remains that someday, we'll wake up to see the hotel thriving, and the Aba River, transformed into a bustling tourist attraction, where visitors can bask in the serene beauty of nature, nestled in the heart of Ogbor Hill, Aba.
I really wish for this to happen in my time. Till then, I'll keep hope alive!
