Today I want to take you with me to one of the most charming corners of Havana: Plaza Vieja. Although its name suggests antiquity, it’s not the oldest square in the city—though it is indeed ancient. Designed in 1559 as Plaza Nueva, this architectural gem is bordered by Muralla, Mercaderes, Teniente Rey, and San Ignacio streets, and has transformed from an open-air marketplace into a vibrant cultural space full of life.

Walking through its corridors is like immersing yourself in this variety of architectural styles. The atmosphere is colorful and lively, and both Cubans and visitors enjoy its energy. One of its treasures is the Camera Obscura, an ingenious optical device located in the Gómez Vila building, from which you can contemplate panoramic views of the city. This building, with its eclectic style, stands at the intersection of Mercaderes and Teniente Rey streets like a sentinel of the past.

Nearby is the Planetarium, which I couldn't visit this time because it was closed, but it's still on my to-do list. Next door, a charmingly decorated tenement building made me dream of living there, waking up every morning overlooking the plaza, as if I were in another era.
Muy cerca se encuentra el Planetario, que en esta ocasión no pude visitar por estar cerrado, pero queda pendiente en mi lista. Al lado, un edificio de vecindad con una decoración encantadora me hizo soñar con vivir allí, despertando cada mañana frente a la plaza, como si habitara otra época.
On Muralla Street, you'll find the Café Escorial, a classic. Although it's usually packed with tourists, that day its outdoor tables were empty, perhaps due to the scorching August sun. Right next door, the Hotel Palacio Cueto impresses with its Art Nouveau style, undulating balconies, exuberant ornamentation, and a history that links it to a former hat factory. Today, renovated, it's an elegant hotel that looks like something out of a modernist fairy tale.
En la calle Muralla, se encuentra el Café Escorial, un clásico. Aunque suele estar lleno de turistas, ese día sus mesas exteriores estaban vacías, quizás por el sol abrasador de agosto. Justo al lado, el Hotel Palacio Cueto se impone con su estilo Art Nouveau, sus balcones ondulantes, ornamentación exuberante y una historia que lo vincula a una antigua fábrica de sombreros. Hoy, rehabilitado, es un elegante hotel que parece sacado de un cuento modernista.
I'm fascinated by the arched corridors surrounding the plaza. In one of them, I found the City Historian's Management Office, located in the Casa de San Juan de Jaruco. There, they explained the "Rutas y Andares" (Routes and Walks) project, which unfolds every summer through the historic center. Although the building was under repair, I was able to enter its central courtyard, surrounded by stone columns and semicircular arches, and I spent some time admiring it.
Me fascinan los corredores arcados que rodean la plaza. En uno de ellos encontré Oficina de Gestión del Historiador de la Ciudad, ubicada en la Casa de San Juan de Jaruco. Allí me explicaron el proyecto “Rutas y Andares”, que se despliega cada verano por el casco histórico. Aunque el edificio estaba en reparación, pude entrar hasta su patio central, rodeado de columnas de piedra y arcos de medio punto, estuve un tiempo contemplandolos.
Continuing my walk, I reached the corner of Muralla and San Ignacio, where La Vitrola restaurant is located. Its decor with hanging bicycles and lively atmosphere always catch my eye. Further on, I continued along another of the corridors that border the plaza and passed La Casa de la Cerveza, a quieter place that invited me to continue walking. With each step, my gaze escaped between the arches, drawn to the plaza, which, like a magnet, invited me to explore it again and again.
Al continuar mi paseo, llegué a la esquina de Muralla y San Ignacio donde se encuentra el restaurante La Vitrola. Su decoración con bicicletas colgantes y su ambiente animado siempre me llaman la atención. Más adelante, seguí por otro de los corredores que bordean la plaza y pasé frente a La Casa de la Cerveza, algo más tranquila, me invitó a seguir caminando. A cada paso, mi mirada se escapaba entre los arcos, atraída por la plaza que, como un imán, me invitaba a recorrerla una y otra vez.
