Ayer en la mañana visité el Cementerio de Colón, en La Habana. Y entrar allí fue como estar en presencia de una inmensa clase magistral de arquitectura, tanto clásica como moderna. Este sitio es como una gran ciudad con sus calles y sus "viviendas", solo que estas casa tienen la peculiaridad de ser bajo tierra.

Yesterday morning, I visited the Colón Cemetery in Havana. Walking in felt like being present at an immense masterclass in architecture, both classical and modern. This place is like a great city with its streets and its "dwellings"—only these houses have the peculiarity of being underground.
Desde que uno se para en su majestuosa e imponente puerta de entrada, tiene la sensación de que va a ver algo único y colosal. La Necrópolis de Colón posee una extensión de aproximadamente 57 hectáreas y es la mayor de toda Cuba, teniendo su entrada por la calle 12 del Vedado habanero.
The moment you stand before its majestic, imposing gateway, you get the sense that you're about to see something unique and colossal. The Colón Necropolis covers approximately 57 hectares and is the largest in all of Cuba, with its entrance on 12th Street in Havana's Vedado neighborhood.
Aunque este no es justamente un sitio turístico, si es uno de los lugares más visitados por los turistas que aprecian lo bello de las creaciones del hombre. El Cementerio de Colón es una obra de arte y venir a La Habana y no visitarlo, es como no ir al Capitolio.
Although this isn't exactly a tourist spot, it is one of the most visited places by travelers who appreciate the beauty of human creations. The Colón Cemetery is a work of art, and coming to Havana without visiting it is like skipping the Capitol building.
Esta fue mi primera visita a este legendario, lugar, por suerte no he tenido que venir a despedir a nadie. Sin embargo era algo que me debía desde hace mucho tiempo por pura curiosidad. Pero en realidad no había dispuesto el tiempo para ello. Así que aprovechando que ayer domingo amanecí en el Vedado en casa de mi amiga, que vive muy cerca del lugar, no lo pensé ni media vez.
This was my first visit to this legendary place; luckily, I haven't had to come here to bid farewell to anyone. Still, it was something I had owed myself for a long time out of pure curiosity. But I'd never really made the time for it. So, taking advantage of the fact that yesterday morning, Sunday, I woke up in Vedado at my friend's house—she lives very close to the site—I didn't think twice.
Quiso la casualidad o el alineamiento de los planetas, que fuera, precisamente, el segundo domingo de mayo. Día en que se celebra por acá, el día de las madres. De manera que había mucha gente circulando por todas partes. Algunas con flores de azucena, rosas, girasoles y velas. Todos con un único objetivo, visitar, hablar y homenajear a sus madres, hijas, abuelas, tías, hermanas, esposas, cuñadas y seres queridos en general.
Whether by chance or planetary alignment, it happened to be precisely the second Sunday of May—the day when Mother's Day is celebrated here. As a result, lots of people were walking around everywhere. Some carried white lilies, roses, sunflowers, and candles. All with a single purpose: to visit, talk to, and honor their mothers, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, wives, sisters-in-law, and loved ones in general.
Pude ver algunas de las tumbas más célebres. En Colón se encuentran "disfrutando" del descanso eterno, muchas personalidades (políticas, deportivas culturales) que han marcado el rumbo de este país. Entre ellos, los grandes escritores Alejo Carpentier, EliseoDiego y José Lezama Lima. También la prima bailarina Alicia Alonso, el célebre ajedrecistas José Raúl Capablanca, nuestra Vedette Rosita Fornés y Rita montaner. Además, el general Máximo Gómez. Estos son solo algunos ejemplos porque la lista es bien extensa.
I was able to see some of the most famous tombs. In Colón, many personalities (political, sports, cultural figures) who have shaped the course of this country are "enjoying" their eternal rest. Among them are the great writers Alejo Carpentier, Eliseo Diego, and José Lezama Lima. Also the prima ballerina Alicia Alonso, the famous chess player José Raúl Capablanca, our vedettes Rosita Fornés and Rita Montaner, and General Máximo Gómez. These are just a few examples—the list is very long.
Algo que me asombró fue ver que en el mismísimo centro del cementerio hay una hermosa iglesia católica. Está pintada de amarillo, con detalles y decoraciones de un gusto muy refinado. Posee una gran cúpula y pinturas alegóricas en sus paredes.
Something that amazed me was seeing a beautiful Catholic church right in the very center of the cemetery. It is painted yellow, with details and decorations of very refined taste. It has a large dome and allegorical paintings on its walls.
Y por supuesto que no podía faltar mi visita a "La milagrosa". Fui preguntando hasta llegar a ella a través de las calles laberinticas del cementerio. Al llegar, una señora me regaló una estampita y habían varias personas reunidas cantando rancheras y alabándola. . Hay una tradición que es saludarla dando pequeños golpes con una de las argollas en el mármol. Se le da la vuelta y nunca se le da la espalda al retirarse de allí. La bóveda está siempre llena de ofrendas.
And of course, I couldn't miss my visit to "La Milagrosa" (The Miraculous One). I kept asking for directions until I found her through the cemetery's labyrinthine streets. Upon arrival, a lady gave me a small holy card, and several people were gathered there singing rancheras and praising her. There is a tradition of greeting her by tapping one of the metal rings against the marble. You walk around it, and you never turn your back on her when you leave. The vault is always full of offerings.
Muchas personas, en especial mujeres, van hasta allí a pedirle milagros de sanación, por salud, fertilidad, por tener un embarazo y parto satisfactorios.Todo estos rituales, giran al rededor de una hermosa historia de amor y dolor. Los invito a profundizar sobre esta apasionada historia. Esta visita fue para mí una experiencia inolvidable. Por su relevancia e importancia, el sitio fue declarado Patrimonio Nacional en 1987.
Many people, especially women, go there to ask her for miracles of healing, for health, for fertility, for a successful pregnancy and childbirth. All these rituals revolve around a beautiful story of love and pain. I invite you to delve deeper into this passionate tale. This visit was an unforgettable experience for me. Because of its relevance and importance, the site was declared a National Heritage Site in 1987.
