Hoy en la mañana me tocó ir a la ciudad y aproveché para comprar un herraje para la taza del baño. Ya era algo inminente, tenía que resolverlo y alguien me habló de este sitio, el menos caro y más surtido de toda la Habana. En sus alrededores hay muchas más tiendas, sin embargo, niguna se parece a esta.

This morning I had to go into the city, and I took the chance to buy a hinge fitting for the toilet tank. It was something that couldn’t wait any longer—I had to get it sorted out. Someone had told me about this place, the cheapest and best-stocked hardware store in all of Havana. There are plenty of other shops nearby, but none of them compare to this one.
En La Habana Vieja, hay una dirección que muchos capitalinos guardan como un tesoro, la ferretería de la calle Monte. No busques letrero bonito ni vitrinas de lujo, porque aquí lo que manda es el refrán: “lo bueno, si breve, dos veces bueno”. Y esta ferretería es breve en fachada, pero enorme en lo que ofrece. Es la Joyita de la Calle Monte, donde puedes resolver la vida sin vaciarte del todo el bolsillo.
In Old Havana, there’s an address that many locals guard like a treasure: the hardware store on Monte Street. Don’t look for a fancy sign or luxury display windows, because here the saying holds true: "Good things, when brief, are twice as good." And this hardware store is brief in its façade but enormous in what it offers. It’s the little gem of Monte Street, where you can solve life’s problems without emptying your pockets.
¿Qué vas a encontrar ahí? Casi de todo. Desde un tornillo tamaño mosquito hasta una bombilla que ya no se fabrica, pasando por bisagras, herrajes para el baño, pintura y hasta un pegamento que une cualquier cosa. Este lugar le resuelve la vida a cualquiera. Y los vendedores, con solo verte la cara, ya saben a que usted vino y que busca.
What will you find there? Almost everything. From a mosquito-sized screw to a light bulb that’s no longer manufactured, plus hinges, bathroom fittings, paint, and even a glue that sticks anything together. This place can solve anyone’s problems. And the sellers—just by looking at your face—already know why you’ve come and what you’re looking for.
Pero lo que hace famosa a esta ferretería no es solo el inventario variadísimo, sino los precios. Aquí la gente va y se ahorra unos kilos de más. Porque todo el mundo sabe que en otras tiendas te "clavan" por un simple clavo. En cambio, en la ferretería de la calle Monte, los precios son más “humanos”. Usted pregunta por un metro de manguera, y el precio es la mitad de lo que le piden en la esquina de Neptuno u itros municipios de la capital. Si eres carpintero y necesitas clavos, una caja te permite llegar a fin de mes sin llorar.
But what makes this hardware store famous isn’t just its incredibly varied inventory; it’s the prices. People go there and save themselves a few extra kilos (of cash), because everyone knows that at other shops, they "nail you" for a simple nail. At the Monte Street hardware store, however, the prices are much more "humane." You ask for a meter of hose, and the price is half of what they’d charge you on the corner of Neptuno or in other parts of the capital. If you’re a carpenter and need nails, buying a box won’t leave you weeping by the end of the month.
Cuando llegué me puse a mirar los estantes y enseguida vi lo que buscaba. Una vendedora, sonriente, me dijo el precio y me sentí conformé. Me mostró el paquete de herraje y me explicó bien todo lo que tenia dentro. También me garantizó su calidad y eso no se paga con dinero, se paga con confianza. De haberlo comprado en mi pueblo, me hubiese costado el triple.
When I arrived, I started looking at the shelves and immediately spotted what I was looking for. A smiling saleswoman told me the price, and I felt satisfied. She showed me the fitting package and thoroughly explained everything that was inside. She also guaranteed its quality—and that’s something you can’t pay for with money; you pay for it with trust. If I had bought it back in my town, it would have cost me three times as much.
La clientela es muy variada, desde el electricista que va todos los días hasta la abuela que busca una junta para la olla de presión. Todos se cruzan con la misma misión, buscar lo que necesitan sin que el bolsillo termine en cuidados intensivos. “Hermano, ¿tú viste lo que cuesta esta llave de paso en la otra tienda? Aquí está casi regalada, dice un cliente mientras hace la cola.
The clientele is very diverse—from the electrician who comes every day to the grandmother looking for a gasket for her pressure cooker. Everyone crosses paths with the same mission: to find what they need without leaving their wallet in intensive care. "Brother, did you see what this stopcock costs at the other store? Here it’s practically a steal," says one customer while waiting in line.
Salí de allí muy complacida con mi compra y les digo que si viven La Habana y tienen un problemita de plomería, electricidad o simple inventiva, lleguense por la calle Monte. Pregunte por la ferretería. Ahí venden de todo, no lo van a atracar y, lo más importante, va a salir con la solución en la mano y algo de dinero en el bolsillo. Porque en Cuba, ahorrar no es tacañería… ¡es sabiduría callejera!
I left there very pleased with my purchase, and I tell you: if you live in Havana and have a little plumbing problem, an electrical issue, or just need something for a DIY project, head over to Monte Street. Ask for the hardware store. They sell everything there, they won’t rip you off, and most importantly, you’ll leave with the solution in your hand and some money still in your pocket. Because in Cuba, saving isn’t being stingy… it’s street smarts!
