En el corazón de municipio Centro Habana, muy cerca del malecón, hay lugares que, aunque no salgan en todas las guías turísticas, tienen una historia y una presencia únicas. La Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción es uno de esos rincones con alma propia, un sitio donde la fe y la vida cotidiana se dan la mano como buenos amigos.
Esta capilla, que actualmente se encuentra en reparación, está ubicada en la calle San Lázaro #805, casi en la esquina con Oquendo y Márquez González. Es una parada obligada para los pacientes y familiares del Hospital Hermanos Ameijeiras, que pasan a dejar una oración y buscar un poco de calma en medio de los apuros. La iglesia es la casa madre de la congregación religiosa de las Hijas de la Caridad de San Vicente de Paúl, y al lado está su convento, que antes funcionaba como colegio. Es toda una institución en el barrio.

In the heart of the Centro Habana municipality, very close to the Malecón, there are places that, even if they don’t appear in every tourist guide, have a unique history and presence. The Church of the Immaculate Conception is one of those corners with a soul of its own, a place where faith and daily life join hands like good friends.
This chapel, currently under repair, is located at San Lázaro Street #805, almost at the corner with Oquendo and Márquez González. It’s a must-stop for patients and families from the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, who drop by to leave a prayer and seek some calm in the midst of their hardships. The church is the mother house of the religious congregation of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, and next to it is their convent, which used to function as a school. It’s a true institution in the neighborhood.
Este colosal inmueble fue construido en 1874 con un estilo neogótico bien marcado. Esta iglesia ha sido un pilar para la comunidad. No solo es un espacio para los rezos, sino que también ha sido un punto de apoyo humanitario en momentos bien difíciles, organizando colectas tras huracanes y otros desastres. Es uno de esos lugares que ha vivido de todo, aguantando estoica el paso del tiempo y los embates de la naturaleza.
This colossal building was constructed in 1874 in a marked neo‑Gothic style. This church has been a pillar for the community. Not only is it a space for prayer, but it has also been a humanitarian hub in very difficult times, organizing collections after hurricanes and other disasters. It’s one of those places that has lived through everything, stoically enduring the passage of time and the onslaughts of nature.
Una visita a la Iglesia de la Inmaculada, situada junto al lado del hospital Hermanos Ameijeiras en La Habana, es una experiencia que combina espiritualidad y arquitectura. El templo se distingue por su sencillez y luminosidad, con amplios ventanales que permiten que la luz natural bañe el interior. Al entrar, se percibe un ambiente sereno, ideal la oración y la reflexión, incluso en medio del ruido de la ciudad. Su cercanía al hospital le otorga un carácter especial, muchos familiares de pacientes acuden allí en buscparaa de consuelo y esperanza. Incluso, transeúntes curiosos, como yo, entran en busca de un rato de paz, silencio y tranquilidad.
A visit to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, located next to the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital in Havana, is an experience that combines spirituality and architecture. The temple stands out for its simplicity and brightness, with large windows that let natural light flood the interior. Upon entering, you perceive a serene atmosphere, ideal for prayer and reflection, even amidst the noise of the city. Its proximity to the hospital gives it a special character; many patients’ relatives go there seeking comfort and hope. Even curious passersby, like me, enter looking for a moment of peace, silence, and tranquility.
El altar, sobrio pero imponente, invita a la contemplación, mientras que las imágenes refuerzan la devoción popular. La iglesia se ha convertido en un punto de encuentro para la comunidad, donde se celebran misas, actividades pastorales y momentos de recogimiento. Es un espacio que transmite paz y fe, en contraste con la agitada vida habanera.
The altar, sober yet imposing, invites contemplation, while the images reinforce popular devotion. The church has become a meeting point for the community, where Masses, pastoral activities, and moments of quiet reflection are held. It is a space that conveys peace and faith, in contrast to the hectic Havana life.
Hace unos años, en 2020, ocurrió un evento que fue un gran susto. La capilla vivió uno de sus momentos más críticos, se desplomó el techo del presbiterio. Por suerte, no hubo que lamentar víctimas, pero el golpe fue durísimo para los feligreses. Las monjas mismas salieron a pedir ayuda y a pedir oraciones para poder reparar ese lugar de encuentro y consuelo. Fue un momento bien feo, pero también un ejemplo de cómo la comunidad se une en las malas.
A few years ago, in 2020, an event happened that was a big scare. The chapel experienced one of its most critical moments: the ceiling of the presbytery collapsed. Luckily, there were no casualties, but the blow was very hard for the parishioners. The nuns themselves came out to ask for help and prayers to be able to repair that place of gathering and consolation. It was a very ugly moment, but also an example of how the community comes together in tough times.
Así que ya sabes, si algún día paseas por La Habana y te acercas por el Hospital Ameijeiras, date una vuelta por la Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción. Más allá de su valor arquitectónico, es un pedacito vivo de la historia de la ciudad, un lugar lleno de historias, fe y esperanza habanera.
So now you know, if you ever stroll through Havana and find yourself near the Ameijeiras Hospital, take a walk by the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Beyond its architectural value, it is a living piece of the city’s history, a place full of stories, faith, and Havana hope.
