Hoy, durante una larga travesía por la ciudad, decidí cruzar el puente de hierro para cortar camino. Este puente, pasa por encima del río Almendares y por allí circulan muchas personas y automóviles. Entonces, decidí tomármelo con calma y disfrutarlo, ver su entorno y los detalles que lo rodean.

Today, during a long trek across the city, I decided to cross the iron bridge to shorten my route. This bridge stretches over the Almendares River, and many people and cars travel across it. So, I decided to take it slow and enjoy it, to observe its surroundings and the details that encompass it.
El puente de hierro sobre el río Almendares, en La Habana, es una estructura que conecta los municipios de El Vedado y el municipio Playa (Miramar), siendo un perfecto enlace entre el centro y el oeste de la ciudad. Su diseño, con grandes vigas de acero y detalles ornamentales, refleja la ingeniería de la época. Más que un simple cruce, poner los pies sobre sus metales, es presenciar una de las muchas creaciones que el hombre ha hecho para facilitar la vida. Este puente ha sobreviviendo a crecidas del rio y al paso del tiempo. Hoy, es un símbolo apreciado de los habaneros, ofreciendo a quienes lo transitan una diversa y espectacular vista del río y sus alrededores.
The iron bridge over the Almendares River in Havana is a structure that connects the municipalities of El Vedado and Playa (Miramar), serving as a perfect link between the city’s center and west. Its design, with large steel beams and ornamental details, reflects the engineering of its time. More than just a crossing, stepping onto its metal surface means witnessing one of the many creations humans have made to make life easier. This bridge has survived river floods and the passage of time. Today, it is a cherished symbol for Havana’s residents, offering those who traverse it a diverse and spectacular view of the river and its surroundings.
El primer contacto, al pasar por allí, es con el sonido. Un crujido metálico, sordo y a la vez musical, recorre la estructura cuando pasan los carros. A mi izquierda y derecha, se alzan las vigas y sus varandas, ahora pintadas y coloridas. Extiendo la mirada hacia un lado y hacia otro, y me pierdo en el horizonte, donde se observan edificios, embarcaciones y una peculiar glorieta que queda muy cerca de la desembocadura del rio en el mar y que en algún momento tendré que averiguar qué es.
The first contact when passing through is with sound—a metallic, muffled, yet musical creak that travels through the structure as cars pass by. To my left and right, the beams and railings rise, now painted and colorful. I gaze from one side to the other, losing myself in the horizon, where buildings, boats, and a peculiar gazebo near the river’s mouth into the sea can be seen and that at some point I will have to figure out what it is.
Me detuve muy cerca de la mitad, en un punto donde el pasillo de los peatones deja ver, al fondo, una caseta con un dibujo de La Giraldilla. Aquí, el ruido de la ciudad es lejano, y el sonido que resalta es el del cause del río. Desde esta altura, el agua deja ver las vetas de la corriente, los remolinos, el musgo y hasta algunas basuras que arrastra el río su a paso. Toco las barandas, el hierro es frio y siento el leve e intermitente temblor del puente. No es miedo lo que siento, pero si respeto, es como escuchar el pulso de esta impresionante creación.
I stopped very near the midpoint, at a spot where the pedestrian walkway reveals, in the distance, a small booth with a drawing of La Giraldilla. Here, the city noise is distant, and the sound that stands out is the river's current. From this height, the water reveals the veins of the current, the whirlpools, the moss, and even some debris carried by the river at its pace. I touch the railings; the iron is cold, and I feel the slight, intermittent trembling of the bridge. It is not fear that I feel, but rather respect—it is like listening to the pulse of this impressive creation.
Aquella gran chimenea que dice "El Cocinero", es parte de un restaurante especializado en comidas cubanas. Mientras observo el paisaje circundante, pienso que este puente no fue hecho para cruzarlo deprisa, fue hecho para conectar, para unir dos orillas. Cruzar este puente me hizo recuerda no soy más que un simple eslabón y que a veces, para avanzar, solo necesitas detenerte un momento, y sentir el temblor del mundo bajo los pies.
That large chimney that reads “El Cocinero” is part of a restaurant specializing in Cuban cuisine. As I observe the surrounding landscape, I think that this bridge was not made to be crossed in haste; it was made to connect, to unite two shores. Crossing this bridge reminded me that I am nothing more than a simple link, and that sometimes, to move forward, you only need to stop for a moment and feel the world trembling beneath your feet.
Al final, tras unos minutos que podrían haber sido horas, llego a la otra orilla para continuar mi recorrido. Me vuelvo y veo como el puente se recorta, se ve pequeño, fuerte, sólido y a la vez ligero, tal parece que se une con el cielo. Y creo que ya no soy la misma persona que empezó a cruzarlo. Traigo en mis zapatos el polvo de su acero, en los oídos el canto del río y en las yemas de mis dedos, la frialdad del hierro.
In the end, after a few minutes that could have been hours, I reached the other shore to continue my journey. I turned back and saw the bridge outlined against the sky—small, strong, solid, yet seemingly light, as if merging with the heavens. And I believe I am no longer the same person who began crossing it. I carry the dust of its steel on my shoes, the song of the river in my ears, and the coldness of the iron on my fingertips.
