Con frecuencia pensamos en el ingenio como una cualidad admirable, un don que solo tienen personas especiales, ocurrentes, inteligentes o elegidas. Lo colocamos junto a las virtudes, como si fuera un atributo de la personalidad. Sin embargo, cuando observamos la realidad con atención, descubrimos una verdad más profunda y menos complaciente, el ingenio no es una virtud, sino una herramienta de supervivencia hija de la necesidad.
No ingeniamos "cosas" porque queramos, sino porque no nos queda más remedio, bien lo supo, a temprana edad, el famoso personaje de la novela Lazarillo de Tomes. Un niño que que, para sobrevivir, no tuvo otra opción que convertirse en un pícaro y un pillo, a fuerza de golpes, miserias y maltratos.

We often think of wit as an admirable quality, a gift that only special, witty, intelligent, or chosen people have. We place it alongside virtues, as if it were a personality trait. However, when we observe reality closely, we discover a deeper and less comfortable truth: wit is not a virtue, but a survival tool born of necessity.
We don't devise "things" because we want to, but because we have no other choice. The famous character from the novel Lazarillo de Tormes knew this well at a young age. He was a boy who, in order to survive, had no option but to become a rogue and a trickster, through beatings, misery, and mistreatment.
La misma naturaleza nos da la primera lección sobre el ingenio. La evolución de las especies, como bien explicó Charles Darwin, no es un proceso caprichoso ni del azar. Los animales no desarrollaron colmillos más afilados o camuflajes más perfectos por simple ocurrencia. Lo hicieron por una necesidad imperiosa, adaptarse o morir. La necesidad de conseguir alimentos, de no ser devorados, de encontrar pareja, es la que determina la aparición del ingenio. Y eso mismo pasa con los seres humanos.
Nature itself gives us the first lesson in ingenuity. The evolution of species, as Charles Darwin explained so well, is not a whimsical or random process. Animals did not develop sharper fangs or more perfect camouflage on a mere whim. They did so out of an urgent necessity: adapt or die. The need to find food, avoid being eaten, or find a mate is what determines the emergence of ingenuity. And the same thing happens with human beings.
Al cubano, por ejemplo, le ha tocado vivir del ingenio toda la vida, porque toda la vida le ha tocado estar con la "soga al cuello". El ingenio del cubano es su "tabla de salvación", trasciende la simple creatividad, es una respuesta histórica a la escasez y la necesidad. El cubano ha vivido décadas de bloqueo, crisis económicas y limitaciones de todo tipo, así que la gente (yo también, por supuesto), ha desarrollado una habilidad excepcional para “resolver”, un verbo que en Cuba significa mucho más que solucionar un problema, implica reinventar la realidad con los pocos recursos disponibles. Mi padre es un gran ingeniero, digo, ingenioso. No hay para él, problema sin solución.
Cubans, for example, have had to live by their wits their entire lives, because their entire lives they've had the "rope around their necks." The ingenuity of Cubans is their "lifeline"; it transcends simple creativity; it is a historical response to scarcity and necessity. Cubans have lived through decades of blockade, economic crises, and limitations of all kinds, so the people (myself included, of course) have developed an exceptional ability to "resolve" (resolver), a verb that in Cuba means much more than solving a problem; it implies reinventing reality with the few resources available. My father is a great engineer, I mean, ingenious. For him, no problem is without a solution.
Por acá, este ingenio se manifiesta en la vida cotidiana de formas asombrosas. Desde el mecánico que mantiene funcionando automóviles de los años 50 con piezas improvisadas, hasta el ama de casa (como yo), que crea recetas nuevas con ingredientes limitados. La capacidad de reciclar, reparar y reutilizar es casi un arte, un simple alambre puede convertirse en una bisagra y una botella vacía puede convertirse en un vaso. En los barrios de Cuba, es común ver viviendas construidas con materiales poco convencionales o ver cómo se instalan sistemas de agua y electricidad con innovadoras soluciones caseras.
Around here, this ingenuity manifests in daily life in astonishing ways. From the mechanic who keeps 1950s cars running with improvised parts, to the housewife (like me) who creates new recipes with limited ingredients. The ability to recycle, repair, and reuse is almost an art; a simple wire can become a hinge, and an empty bottle can become a glass. In Cuban neighborhoods, it's common to see houses built with unconventional materials or to see water and electrical systems installed with innovative homemade solutions.
Pero el ingenio cubano no es solo material, también es social y emocional. Ante las dificultades, el humor se vuelve un escudo y un arma. Los chistes, las frases populares y el “invento” diario permiten sobrellevar la frustración y mantener la esperanza. No se trata de contar chistes por entretenimiento, sino porque es una estrategia de vida. El “resolviendo” se ha convertido en un modo de vida, donde el trabajo por cuenta propia, las redes informales de intercambio y el “hacer de todo un poco” garantizan la subsistencia.
But Cuban ingenuity is not just material; it is also social and emotional. Faced with difficulties, humor becomes both a shield and a weapon. Jokes, popular sayings, and the daily "invention" help to cope with frustration and maintain hope. It's not about telling jokes for entertainment, but because it's a life strategy. "Figuring things out" (resolviendo) has become a way of life, where self-employment, informal exchange networks, and "doing a bit of everything" guarantee subsistence.
Esta capacidad de adaptación, de "crear esporas", refleja una inteligencia práctica y una resiliencia profunda. El cubano ha aprendido a nadar contra la corriente, a encontrar oportunidades donde otros ven obstáculos. Esa "resistencia creativa" forzada ha dado lugar a una cultura de la inventiva que es motivo de orgullo y, a la vez, un testimonio de la fuerza de un pueblo que ama la vida. Justo ahora que la falta de petróleo (más que de costumbre), es el "plato fuerte" aquí, no dudo que el cubano se las ingenie para inventar un nuevo combustible hecho de cualquier cosa. Si no hay gas licuado o electricidad para cocinar, un cubano cocina con leña o carbón, el asunto es resolver.
This capacity for adaptation, for "creating spores," reflects practical intelligence and deep resilience. Cubans have learned to swim against the current, to find opportunities where others see obstacles. This forced "creative resistance" has given rise to a culture of inventiveness that is a source of pride and, at the same time, a testament to the strength of a people who love life. Right now, with the shortage of oil (more than usual) being the "main course" here, I have no doubt that Cubans will find a way to invent new fuel made from anything. If there's no liquefied gas or electricity for cooking, a Cuban will cook with firewood or charcoal; the point is to figure it out.
Por tanto, el ingenio es la respuesta que damos cuando los recursos escasean y los problemas crecen. Es un mecanismo que nos permite crear una solución entre la realidad que vivimos y la realidad que necesitamos. En la "lucha" diaria de un cubano y de un ser humano en general por mantener la cordura, el resultado es el mismo, la necesidad, como madre que es, siempre va a parir al ingenio.
Therefore, ingenuity is the response we give when resources are scarce and problems grow. It is a mechanism that allows us to create a solution between the reality we live in and the reality we need. In the daily "struggle" of a Cuban, and of a human being in general, to maintain sanity, the result is the same: necessity, as the mother it is, will always give birth to ingenuity.
