Have you ever wished that you could control the weather? Wouldn’t it be so nice if you had the power to get whatever weather you wanted? You might be feeling like it should rain, and just with a snap of your fingers, it starts raining. Well, this is exactly how I feel when the weather is too hot. You see, I can handle cold weather. Whenever it is extremely cold, all I have to do is avoid going outside, wear a very thick sweater, socks, and fold myself in a very warm duvet. But you see when the weather is very hot, there are many things you can do about it, especially when there is no electricity. I don’t think I like that feeling very much. You start sweating like a Christmas goat, then you keep going out to deep yourself in the pool. Sometimes, you wish you could just put off all your clothes and remain like that all day. So, for this week’s India United contest, the community asks us how we battle the summer season. How do you battle the heat and prevent your skin from melting?
I’m sure we have all had ugly and beautiful experiences with the summer season. For some, the summer season is a period for them to have fun, go on excursions to the beach, and enjoy swimming in the pool. For introverts like me who barely like going out, the summer season is my least favorite. Despite this, we have our ways of battling the heat. What is the weather like in your country? What are you doing to battle the heat? What are you doing to reduce or control it?
One of the ways I battle the heat during the summer season is by wearing light clothes. I like to be comfortable. I take my comfort seriously to the extent that I can go great lengths to make sure I am super comfortable. Whenever I am inside my room, whether it is hot or cold, I wear light clothes. During my second year in the university, my roommate was totally different. Whenever we were inside our room (even at night,) he would wear long and tight Jean trousers and then wear long-sleeved shirts. On the other hand, I would just wear shorts and a singlet. Whenever I asked him if it wasn’t comfortable and why he was punishing himself, he would reply that he feels more comfortable wearing a full outfit even at night. During the hot season, I always make sure I wear just shorts and singlets indoors and light clothes like vintages whenever I go out.
Another way I battle the scorching heat during the summer season is to open the windows and sometimes, the door. The aim is to let as much air in. On days when there is electricity, fans come to my aid. I would turn on all the fans in the house and sit shirtless. But the moment the electricity goes off, the heat comes right back with full force. It is always like they are watching behind and waiting for the electricity to go out so they can strike. Whenever there is no electricity, I make use of hand-made fans. It takes a lot of energy to keep using it for a long time, but at least something is better than nothing.
Lastly, the most efficient way I battle the scorching heat during the summer season is to take a cold bath. Emphasis on the word, “cold.” As long as the water is running, I can take my bath more than 4 times a day. There’s this joy that comes with taking a cold bath during the summer season. It is relaxing and therapeutic.
