Thanks to the magic of streaming platforms like Netflix, we have a direct window into the lifestyle, humor, cuisine, and culture of this fascinating Asian country from the comfort of our own homes.
This week, I decided to explore the catalog of new releases and stumbled upon a brand-new comedy-action gem on Netflix: “Husbands in Action” (남편들), which premiered worldwide on June 19, 2026.
What is “Husbands in Action” about? (No spoilers)
The film introduces us to two polar-opposite characters who are forced to work together for an extreme cause. On one hand, we have Choong-sik (played by the charismatic Jin Sun-kyu), a tough and stubborn detective from the narcotics unit. On the other, there’s Min-seok (played by Gong Myung), a young, peaceful, and somewhat refined veterinarian.
What’s the problem between them? Choong-sik is the ex-husband and Min-seok is the current husband of the same woman. Their inevitable male rivalry and natural jealousy explode when the woman and her young daughter are kidnapped by a dangerous criminal network. To rescue them, this “ex” and this “current” husband must set aside their differences and form one of the most dysfunctional and entertaining action duos in recent cinema.
Watching this film left me reflecting on two very interesting aspects of contemporary South Korea:

What I loved about Husbands in Action is seeing how today’s Korean society normalizes and addresses these modern family dynamics with incredible freshness. Despite the natural jealousy and the extremely comical moments of rivalry between the biological father and the stepfather, what ultimately prevails is a deep bond of affection, protection, and mutual responsibility.
In Korea, there is the concept of “Jeong” (정), which is that feeling of attachment, empathy, and deep affection that develops through sharing life and caring for others. In the end, both men demonstrate that what matters most is the well-being of the family they share.
2. The Perfect Balance Between Physical Comedy and Action
Korean cinema has a very distinctive style of blending genres. While action comedies in the West can sometimes feel formulaic, here the fight choreography is extremely dynamic and realistic, yet it weaves seamlessly with classic Korean humor: exaggerated gestures, rapid-fire dialogue, and absurd situations that pop up at the most unexpected moments. These elements are very common in Asian cinema.
Final Thoughts
Watching South Korean films is always a cultural adventure. Although it’s not something I usually do, thanks to platforms like Netflix, we can now break down barriers and explore cinema from other parts of the world. For a long time, the West was dominated by Hollywood productions, but now we have a great opportunity to discover incredible films from around the globe and appreciate the talent of creators from other cultures.
In doing so, we not only enjoy a good story, but we also get to appreciate their streets, their way of communicating, their codes of respect, and the way they express their deepest emotions. “Husbands in Action” is definitely a 100/100 recommendation for a fun weekend.
