The world needs to read more literature. Notice that I'm not saying it needs more literature—there's already enough—but rather that it needs to read more.
I'm a writer, so I suppose I'm assumed to have a certain bias on this matter. But I'm not going to defend reading as a lofty cultural act or as a sign of intellectual distinction. That seems the least important thing to me. I defend reading for a much more practical reason: I think it makes us less idiotic. And I'm not referring to academic intelligence. I'm referring to emotional intelligence, to the ability to live with others.
When you read a novel, you enter someone else's mind. For hours, sometimes days, you're not yourself. You're a murderer in 19th-century Russia, or a teenager in a remote village, or a detective confronting their own demons. You read their thoughts, feel their contradictions, understand their fears even if you don't share them. That—and I say this without any sentimentality—is training for real life.
Because outside of books, people don't come with a narrator to explain why they act the way they do. People are opaque. And our instinctive reaction, when someone does something we don't understand or that bothers us, is to judge. It's thinking, "What an idiot this guy is" or "How wrong he was to do that." But if you've read a lot, you have more resources to stop for a second and think: What happened to this person to make them react like that? What are they afraid of?
That's empathy. It's not about being naive or blindly following the crowd. It's simply having the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes before jumping in. And I'm convinced that if more people read fiction, there would be less shouting on social media, fewer snap judgments, less tension.
Then there's the other thing. Culture. Reading gives you context. You understand a news story, a movie, a conversation better because you've seen that same pattern in a book. And there's the joy, the one I mentioned. Not mindless joy, but the satisfaction of finding a sentence that says exactly what you felt but couldn't express. That feeling of not being alone, that another human being, sometimes dead for a hundred years, has already gone through the same thing as you.
I'm not saying that reading will save the world. But I do believe it saves us. It makes us more complex, more patient, more interesting. And if each person were a little more interesting and a little more patient, the world as a whole would be a much more habitable place. That's why I say the world needs to read more. Out of pure selfishness, so we can live better in it.

El mundo necesita leer más literatura. Fíjense que no digo que necesite más literatura, ya esa hay, sino que necesita leer más.
Soy escritora, así que supongo que se me presupone cierto sesgo en este asunto. Pero no voy a defender la lectura como un acto cultural elevado ni como un signo de distinción intelectual. Eso me parece lo de menos. Yo defiendo la lectura por una razón mucho más práctica: creo que nos hace menos idiotas. Y no me refiero a la inteligencia académica. Me refiero a la inteligencia emocional, a la capacidad de vivir con los demás.
Cuando lees una novela, te metes en la cabeza de otro. Durante horas, a veces días, no eres tú. Eres un asesino en la Rusia del siglo XIX, o una adolescente en un pueblo perdido, o un detective que se enfrenta a sus propios demonios. Lees sus pensamientos, sientes sus contradicciones, entiendes sus miedos aunque no los compartas. Eso, y esto lo digo sin ninguna cursilería, es un entrenamiento para la vida real.
Porque fuera de los libros, la gente no viene con un narrador que te explica por qué actúa como actúa. La gente es opaca. Y nuestra reacción instintiva, cuando alguien hace algo que no entendemos o que nos molesta, es juzgar. Es pensar "qué imbécil es este tipo" o "qué mal que ha hecho esto". Pero si has leído mucho, tienes más recursos para detenerte un segundo y pensar: ¿qué le habrá pasado a este para que reaccione así? ¿qué miedo tendrá?
Eso es la empatía. No es ser noble ni comulgar con ruedas de molino. Es simplemente tener la capacidad de ponerse en el lugar del otro antes de saltar. Y estoy convencido de que si más gente leyera ficción, habría menos gritos en las redes sociales, menos juicios sumarios, menos crispación.
Luego está lo otro. La cultura. Leer te da contextos. Entiendes mejor una noticia, una película, una conversación, porque has visto ese mismo patrón en algún libro. Y está la alegría, esa que mencionaba. No la alegría tonta, sino la satisfacción de encontrar una frase que dice exactamente lo que tú sentías pero no sabías expresar. Esa sensación de no estar solo, de que otro ser humano, a veces muerto hace cien años, ya pasó por lo mismo que tú.
No digo que leer nos vaya a salvar el mundo. Pero sí creo que nos salva a nosotros mismos. Nos vuelve más complejos, más pacientes, más interesantes. Y si cada persona fuera un poco más interesante y un poco más paciente, el conjunto sería un lugar mucho más habitable. Por eso digo que el mundo necesita leer más. Por puro egoísmo, para poder vivir mejor en él.
