Indian Roller Coracias benghalensis
though i have never seen this beautiful bird in our garden, it is quite common in the village both in the center of town and in the surrounding farmlands. typically i have seen it perched on a wire. being predominantly an insect eater i guess it's on the lookout for any prey, either flying or on the ground.
indian rollers are known for their beauty and grace in flight, particularly in breeding season. when still, the blue markings contrast wonderfully with the brown but it is especially beautiful when the brilliant dark and light blue pattern on the wings becomes visible during flight. they are called rollers because of the way they fly, tilting their wings much like an airplane but with far more agility, dexterity and finesse.
