Freewrite - "What's in the Box?”

in Freewriters13 days ago

The wooden box, despite its considerable weight, was empty. It hadn't always been but it surely was now. There was also a thick layer of dust on top of it that you could write your name in if you had nothing better to do with your time and didn't mind getting your fingertips dirty for no good reason.

Farida had no time for such frivolities. The box was hers now in all its disappointing emptiness and she had no clue what it used to contain. How could her mother just leave it to her in the will without an explanation? What a cruel joke to play on someone who had no means of asking the joker for the truth.

Armed with a box of tissues, she wiped the dust. As the last layer of grime fell away, a few lines of text were revealed printed on the very top of the box. Farida could not read them or even confidently discern what language they were written in, but beneath them, though much smaller, in plain English were the words:

When needed, the contents of this box will appear.

"But I need money now!" Farida thought miserably. She squeezed her eyes shut and counted to ten hoping to get a hold on her frustrations before returning to her quest.

When her eyes reopened the box was filled with hundred dollar bills and a note in her mother's distinctive ornate handwriting that simply said, "You’re welcome".
