The problem was the law. Far too many laws were written with the assumption that the highest positions of power would only ever be held by relatively sane adults. You just can't leave issues like that up to an assumption.
Chris understood that this was not the same as thinking that all leaders could be good people who were above reproach. Nobody was that naive. Greedy, narcissistic psychos attained power all the time. They tended to want it the most. But usually there was enough of an overlap between their wants and the needs of the people for the nation to keep running.
But these weren't usual happenings. As Chris buttoned up his brand new uniform and prepared to greet the new dictator-for-life on horseback, the word “usual” was the furthest thing from his mind.
I learned the origin of the word ‘dictator’ like yesterday while listening to a podcast with my son. That was interesting. On another note, this is a work of fiction, any resemblance to real people or places is a coincidence etc etc
