Liberty Returns to US Coins (at least for a year!)

in Hive Collectors10 days ago

About a week ago, a person named Kellen Hoard who served as a Representative of the General Public on the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) answered some questions on Reddit in an AMA. Evidently the CCAS was established in 2003 to advise the Secretary of the Treasury on US coin designs.

Now if you are like me, you thought that while the Mint is a bureau under the Department of Treasury, it had some independence , but I guess not, and I guess furthermore this new organization was created outside the mint to advise the Treasury more directly on new coins.

Whew... confusing.

But anyway, the AMA was fairly interesting. She was fairly forthcoming with answers.

Many many questions asked the very thing that many of us have in this group: when are dead presidents going away and Liberty coming back?

Her answer to these questions was both surprising and disappointing. The surprising part was that Liberty designs are coming back for the semiquincentennial release of many coins next year. (2026 being the 250th anniversary of America). Wow! She showed off some of the designs recommended by the CCAC and they are very cool!

Now if you Google "semiquincentennial US coin proposals" or something like that, you will see many more designs. Some of confusing ones, such as honoring civil rights or women's suffrage. There is nothing wrong with those things but neither topic has anything to do with the founding of America. The above photos were the ones shared in the AMA thread, so maybe some of the other proposals you find floating around the net have already been eliminated. Anyway especially that first Liberty design for the dime I shared above looks wonderful and I can't see how anyone would object to it.

That aside, the bad point here is that Kellen said that the next year (2027) will probably revert to the previous presidents designs unless Congress steps in. In other words, the mint is being too wimpy and won't push for these designs to be permanent and is going to pass the buck to Congress. And we know they won't do anything, so it will be back to the status quo. Oh well. But at least for one year we can have some pretty cool coins!

If this plan is allowed, then I'll definitely be ordering a proof set of coins for 2026.

Another thing that came up is that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is evidently a huge coin collector, so much so that he was a member of the CCAC for a year in 2017.

So in addition to playing for the Lakers during his vacations from the airline industry, he also is a coin guy! Kind of cool.

Anyway, here is the AMA if you want to go read through it.

Thoughts?

Very fascinating designs, although very modern. What happened to the olive branch in the eagle's talon? Did he drop it? What is that supposed to represent?

Good catch! The olive branch represents peace whereas the arrows represent war. A troubling sign that the idea of peace is gone.

I suppose it's not much different than the reverse of the MERCURY dime that literally represented fascism. The fasces in this image included a blade attached at the top, making it an AXE. Imagery making it clear that the purpose of this fascism is for war (like the arrows), but it's wrapped in an olive branch indicating peaceful restraint. But that blade remains sharp and deadly!

Worth noting that the fasces didn't come to explicitly represent fascism until il Duce took it and ran with it. It is interesting that unlike the swastika, which became verbolten in the West after WWII, the fasces continues to be used here and there. Perhaps the powers that be think the public too ignorant to realize the meaning.

Also, the eagle is looking at a particular word with great interest...

In addition to the lack of an olive branch, I do dislike that as well. Even overlooking any hidden message here, just from a visual standpoint "Liberty over tyranny" while a nice motto, makes the coin too busy. Just going with the traditional "Liberty" is good enough.

Those are very nice designs, very precise

I agree

Such an awesome announcement and I wish it were a permanent change. Such pretty designs! The one's having nothing to do with the county's founding shouldn't be there, not because they are bad events, they have nothing to do with the anniversary. Maybe it will kick the public into going back to Liberty, but I'm not holding my breath.

Call me cynical, but I don't think the public's opinion matters anymore. Even if these coins are overwhelmingly popular, I doubt the mint or congress has the guts to keep them going.

how do we get our hands on these coins?

If they are approved, it won't be till next year.

I like them a lot, but I sure hope they turn out to be our $1, $2, $5 and $10 Silver Coins...

We can only hope.

very cool i must say, shows a ear picture of liberty. i wonder what the future plans for them are aside from releasing

The only plan seems to be release them for a year, then they go away. One might hope they return at some point in the future, but nothing was said about that.

ohhh i see seems no one took that project seriously

Are these a list of finalist selections? Usually there are hundreds if not thousands of entries submitted by artists and private citizens.

There was no mention of that in the AMA, but these are the few that she shared, so I'm assuming they are ahead of the others in the selection process.

That is pretty cool about Jabar. I like the Dime design, but I am not sure how I feel about the other ones. A proof set would be pretty cool if they come out with these. I can see why you would want one. Especially if they just go back to the same old trash!

That dime one is the standout. That is just beautiful. But y'know my thinking is that even the less good ones are light years better than the presidents we have now.

Yeah, that is a good point!

Those liberty designs are great, one of the most beautiful I've seen, I hope they materialize 🙏

I hope so!

It sounds like you’ve been diving deep into the world of numismatics, @dbooster! The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) indeed plays a fascinating role in shaping U.S. coin designs. It’s intriguing how the committee bridges the gap between the Mint and the Treasury, offering a more direct advisory channel.

The semiquincentennial Liberty designs for 2026 are definitely exciting! It’s a rare opportunity to see Liberty return to U.S. coins, even if only temporarily. The designs you mentioned, like the Liberty dime, seem to have captured a lot of enthusiasm. It’s a shame that the momentum might not carry forward into 2027, but at least 2026 will be a standout year for collectors.

As for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, his passion for coin collecting and his time on the CCAC in 2017 is such a cool tidbit. It’s inspiring to see someone with such a diverse background—NBA legend, author, and advocate—contribute to the world of numismatics.

Are you planning to add the 2026 proof set to your collection? It sounds like a must-have for anyone passionate about coins!
